Peaches 10-19-2003 11:34 AM

I read it last year - excellent book! :thumbsup

HowlingWulf 10-19-2003 11:34 AM

I've read it. Yay. Seems ready-made for a movie.

foe 10-19-2003 11:44 AM

It would make a cool movie.

Michael Crichton, right? Most of his stuff is now tailored for movies and tv. He starts with the screenplay, and then adds some extra filler for the book. I gave up on him after "Timeline."

I quit reading Crichton after Air Frame which I though sucked. He seems to be writing for screenplay contracts. He doesn't go into enough detail to completely immerse you in the world he is describing as only a book can do.

Good point, I did notice that.
On the other hand it makes his books very fast reads.

Prey was very good.... much better than Timeline. I'm surprised as shit they're even bothering to make Timeline into a movie. I mean, the initial concept was cool, but then they seemed to get too deep into the midevil/sword-wielding storyline stuff. PLUS... if you're like me you pick stories apart and find inconsistencies -- which this book (timeline) had quite a few of.

Now Prey on the other hand kept my interest the whole way through. I really liked the whole technology aspect of the story, although very far fetched (at least for now).

Another series of books that are pretty good are Dan Brown's stuff. The Da Vinci Code has been on the best seller's list for something like 30 weeks now, but it spawned my interest in his earlier stuff. It's also going straight to the theatres like Crichton's stuff - i think Ron Howard is in talks of directing it.

For the techno-geeks such as myself, another good one from him is Digital Fortress... which is about the NSA and cryptography. A pretty good read. And Deception Point is pretty good as well -- about a meteor discovered in one of the ice shelfs that supposedly contains proof of life on other planets. Pretty good stuff all around.

Prey was great. He has good stuff even his autobiography is good. Timeline was one of his weakest books. I had to think about ti to remember even what it was about.

foe 10-19-2003 01:16 PM

I started reading timeline, but didnt finish it.

hibbidiji 10-19-2003 01:49 PM

The main problem with Crichton is that often a great book makes a terrible movie.. cases in point: Congo, eaters of the dead (13th warrior) and terrible books will probably make great ones :) I didnt particularly hate timeline... as most of you have said, it was a fast read. I thought prey was OK. a few situations were a little too convenient, but whatever. thats pop fiction for you.

hehe, now an awesome movie? how about Artemis Fowl... those are some damn good books. I also wouldnt mind seeing a couple terry pratchett movies too :)

D

Why 10-19-2003 02:08 PM

i read a lot, and i loved that book. its a fast read, and its a good read.

micheal chrichton and clive cussler are my two favorite authors.

if you havent read a clive cussler book, get one like sahara. most of them are about the same character, but dont go in chronological order.

Why 10-19-2003 02:10 PM

whoa, you fuckers didnt like timeline? i thought it was a good read, not as good as prey was though.

i like robert jordans books as well. the wheel of time or whatever its called.

slapass 10-19-2003 02:24 PM

Artemis Fowl should get picked up for a movie as their some good stuff.

I've got that and Angels & Demons - just haven't gotten around to them yet :winkwink:

Right now I'm reading "I don't know how she does it", "Mystic River" and "Life of Pi". Loving all of them :)
