Probably why I am so into brunettes. Phoebe Cates is on natural looking girl-next-door type, that exudes such a 'passive' beauty. Wonder what she is doing nowadays. Last I saw of her was in Gremlins 2 lol.

Who could forget that beautiful smile, that incredibly distinctive face? She was at the top of her field in the 80s -- part of such widely successful films as "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" and "Gremlins," but the 90s brought marriage and family...and a reworking of priorities. So what is Phoebe Cates doing now?

The answer comes with very little searching. Phoebe has made no secret of the fact that she stopped acting to raise a family. Shortly after shooting "Drop Dead Fred," Phoebe stated she would not be making films for a few years so she could be with her son, Owen. But she continued to make films and after great difficulties during the filming of "Princess Caraboo," she decided to drop out of acting altogether. If you need further proof of her seriousness in this matter, she has dropped her talent agency and is no longer registered in the Actors Guild.

She started so young, it's no wonder she eventually craved a normal life. Born Phoebe Katz in New York City, she began modeling as a teen, soon moving to such films as a "Blue Lagoon"-ish movie called "Paradise," and Fast Times at Ridgemont High. The latter became an instant cult classic and led the 20-year-old to the role of the love interest in the 1984 summer hit "Gremlins." She followed that hit up with a TV miniseries called "Lace."

In "Lace," Phoebe played an adopted baby-turned-porn star-turned-fashion model named Lili. The miniseries was seen by millions, and gave us one of the most remembered movie lines of the 80s: "Which one of you bitches is my mother?" In 1985 she starred in the sequel to the miniseries, "Lace II." With nothing near the success of its predecessor, "Lace II" proved to be the beginning of a downslide for the actress's film career.

But personally, things were looking up. During a read-through for the 1983 film "The Big Chill," Phoebe met actor Kevin Kline. She was reading for the role that would eventually go to Meg Tilley. Phoebe and Kevin met again a year later while performing at New York's public theater. They married in 1989 and soon the tables turned. Kevin's career was on the upswing and Phoebe's ... well, let's just say things weren't going so well.

Phoebe followed up "Lace II" with small roles in "Date With An Angel" and "Bright Lights, Big City." She starred with her husband as the other woman in 1990's "I Love You to Death" and attempted another sequel, "Gremlins 2: The New Batch," in 1990. "Drop Dead Fred" was a critical and box office failure, although Phoebe's performance reviewed well. She starred with good friend Bridget Fonda in the 1993 film "Bodies, Rest and Motion" and with her husband in the 1994 feature "Princess Caraboo." That proved to be the breaking point for the actress, who was already growing weary of juggling both career and family.

Ironically, "Princess Caraboo" was perhaps Phoebe's biggest role to date. She starred in the film, appearing in every scene. Hoping to relieve some of her pressure, her husband came to England to help with their child and ended up with a role in the film. But it wasn't enough. Phoebe was pregnant during filming and told press that she would be taking some time off after the movie. She held to her promise, all but disappearing from sight after "Princess Caraboo's" release.

Meanwhile, her husband's career continues to rise. Kevin has made eleven films since "Princess Caraboo," including the box office hits "In and Out" and "French Kiss." He often appears at events with Phoebe, who looks as beautiful as ever. In 1997, Phoebe starred in a documentary called "Scratch the Surface" with Bridget Hall, Whitney Houston, and Brooke Shields, but she has not acted in a film since "Princess Caraboo."

Phoebe is now one of the hottest stars on the Internet, with a great number of websites and photo galleries devoted to her. Do a search for "Phoebe Cates" and any number of sites will come up -- most are photo galleries showcasing the actress's beauty.

No doubt Phoebe's fans hope she'll come back to the screen someday. But it's obvious that she has finally found happiness in her personal life, so one can only hope she continues to do what is best for her. Luckily, her work is preserved on video rental store shelves all over the world.

i agree, Phoebe was perfection, class and beauty.

i haven't seen her in a long time, and I don't want to, rather remember her as she is in that picture. really depresses me watching people I still think of as young aging badly.

Phoebe is a Jewess or what? Think so but not sure. Her family is well known in Hollywood, Dad was a writer or director same as her uncle.

I think she is half Philipino.

GrimShawn 10-14-2003 08:25 PM

can't argue with that

Mutt 10-14-2003 08:25 PM

never knew that - she's half Jewish half Filipina. Damn she really left showbiz behind, says in this bio she doesn't even keep up her membership in the Screen Actors Guild.

Biography:
Phoebe Cates's father was the late Joseph Cates, an American producer and director with some Russian Jewish ancestry. Her mother was a Filipina with some Spanish-Chinese heritage. Phoebe's brother Phillip Cates is also an actor and producer and she has two other sisters: Valerie and Alexandra.

A native of New York City, Phoebe majored in dance at the Juilliard School. She started her career as a model and later shifted to acting. Her very first movie was "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" in 1982. The rest is history.

She married fellow actor Kevin Kline in 1989 and they are blessed with two beautiful kids: Greta and Owen. Today Phoebe is a stay-at-home mom and doesn't have plans of making any more films in the foreseeable future. She is no longer signed to any talent agency and is no longer registered at the Actors Guild. Even so, her timeless beauty has not been forgotten and she remains the idol of many fans around the world.

Her mother is half Japanese..Her dad is white.

She's retired now and is married to actor Kevin Kline. If you go to rexfeatures.com you can see recent pics of her, she is still cute, hardly a wrinkle in site.
