Nice, the checkerboard approach in Hong Kong. It's closed now but my dad used to fly in on that approach alot and said it was pretty hairy from a passenger view.

Actually you are very wrong........ this is the normal approach procedure at Punta Cana or Puerto Plata, can't remember.
Rate of descend is 1700 ft/min and touch down is about 50 feet after last marker.

Shok 10-14-2003 10:28 AM

btw the airport is Princess Juliana in St. Maarten

The Cessna pilot died and all pasengers on the PSA (who was on approach) also died along with a few people on the ground. I also got the cockpit tapes i can post onhere (the original ones) but i don't think you want that :-)

I typed out the transcript of the aircraft in the back who got hit by a Cessna.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ATC Traffic at 12 o'clock three miles, out of 1700.
F/O Got him.
Capt Traffic in sight.
ATC OK sir, maintain visual separation, contact Lindberg Tower 133.3. Have a nice day now!
Capt Is that the one we're looking at?
F/O Yeah - but I don't see him now.
Capt (To Tower) OK - we had it there a minute ago.
Capt I think he's passed off to our right.
Tower Yeah.
Capt (To F/O) He was right over there a minute ago.
F/O Yeah.
Tower Cleared to land.
Capt (To crew) Are we cleared of that Cessna?
F/E Supposed ot be.
Capt I guess.
S/N I hope (laughing).
F/O There's one underneath... I was looking at that inbound there.
Capt Whoops!
F/O Arghhh! (Metalic crunching noise).
Capt What have we got here?
F/O Its bad.
Capt Eh.
F/O We're hit man - we are hit!
Capt (Quietly but positively to Tower)...
Tower, we're going down - this is PSA.

This is taken from the original voice recorder.

It is neither one of those ... I flew into both in the past 2 years, and can tell you that it is not either one. If I remember correctly Puerto Plata runway is near the water (very fucking near ... too near for comfort), and it is short as hell, but there is no beach at the end of it.
I think St. Maarten is correct.

The landing gear is down, but the wheel assembly tilts backwards... I presume it's to help soften the landing, or perhaps keep traction going on takeoff.

Awesome pic, but I want to know why no one is holding their ears? The noise at that distance must be incredible.

High Bypass fans at idle thrust really are not all that loud.

What happened here? You can see wheel smoke and it looks like his nose is up so he's actually attempting to land at this angle? WTF?

Shok 10-14-2003 01:49 PM

that's at the old Hong Kong airport. On that approach the planes have to make a hard right bank and then immediatly touch down. Lots of crosswind action there.

Planes would often land cocked into the wind then jab full rudder to straighten out when the tires touched.

Shok is an airline/airplane trivia junky - in case you didn't already notice. :winkwink: And you have to change rooms with him at the Tropicana if your room faces the airport and his faces the mountains.

But his compass abilities come in handy. :)

Your right about the wheel angle....... that angle is to let the wheels "softly" touch down.

Not alot of noise because at that level into the approach engines are running in idle. He is going to flair the aircraft wich is normal procedure. Right after touch down the noise increases again because the pilots apply thrust reverse in most airports. What they do is they idle the engines untill touch down then they put them in reverse and apply thrust again (reverse being that the thrust from the engines is directed to the opposit direction to help stop the aircraft)

Read above :-) Smoke is from the tires being ripped appart :-)

I used to fly the City Bird MD-11 Albatros into Punta Cana and Puerto Plata. Don't remember wich one but one of those has a beach infront of the marker, trust me :-)
Puerto plata is a level 3 at the breaks - so yes, very short :-)
The pisctures however could have been taken at St-Maarten, never been there myself.

invertiga 10-15-2003 04:46 AM

I've been into the old Hong Kong airport a number of times on the old approach through the city, pity they got rid of it cause it was freakin awesome.

Just as good was payin the old Hong Kong aeroclub on the side of the runway to sit on their roof drink beers and watch the planes come in. Watching China airlines pilots come in was the best, the amount of times they were way off line was frightening :)

What happened? Looks like the engine seperated from the wing.

Shok 10-15-2003 07:23 AM

thats the American Airlines DC-10 crash at Chicago O'Hare in 1978.

Yeah the engine came off on takeoff which ripped the hydraulics out of the wing causing the slats to go up on that side but remained down on the otherside.

The pilots slowling lost all roll control.

Ironically this was the first flight that American was using the "Nose Cam" on, that allowed the passengers to watch the takeoff from the onboard screens. They all saw it coming.

What was the outcome of the investigation? Was it after that accident that they grounded all DC-10 and MD-11 to replace the engine pilons? I think it was around that time if i'm correct.

Guess the pilots didn't really know what was happening else they would have reconfigured the other wing and apply slats up and flaps down - i can slightly remember an incident where the aircraft suffered an in flight engine blow out. Parts of the engine penetrated the fuselage causing a loss of almost all hydraulics. The pilots reconfigured what they could and applied slats up and flaps down on both wings. They made it to the airport and did a hard touch down (i think it was around 220 knots TAS).
