Can Mac users play .wmv files?

A friend of mine can... I don't know how though. I know it is not something every mac can play. :) Quicktime is good for Mac.

baddog 10-14-2003 12:54 AM

if they have WMP they can

vapewiz 10-14-2003 12:56 AM

WMP has a player for mac OS. However it does not work for all mac os when streaming the files.

Interesting. I don't use a mac, but I was just wondering if they can play .wmv files.

Digipimp 10-14-2003 01:29 AM

Yes they can with the Windows Media Player, however they can't play WMV 9 encoded files because Microsuck hasn't updated the mac player in a long long long long long time. They say they are going to update it shortly after OS 10.3 comes out for mac which is in just under 2 weeks.

As a Mac user I can play Windows Media files, but with certain limitations:

1. I can't play the latest V9 files. MS haven't released a WM player for Mac OS yet;

2. Performance is poor. Streaming is virtually impossible. Even files saved to disk tend to stutter a little, particularly at the start.

QuickTime is much better, as you may expect, while Real makes a happy medium.

Hope this helps a little.

Whats the quality of Quicktime like now at dial-up compression?

bhutocracy 10-14-2003 02:25 AM

yeah but it sucks having to deal with the % of mac users who have the wrong version of the plugin.. just provide wmv AND mpeg.

BRISK 10-14-2003 02:36 AM

I've always used MPEG, but I think WMV is very good (at least for windows users it is) if not better than MPEG.

From what I've seen, WMV files are better quality than MPEG files that are the same size.

IMO, RealVideo sucks and Quicktime sucks compared to MPEG and WMV.

bhutocracy 10-14-2003 02:41 AM

WMV *IS* great and it is heaps smaller for the same quality.
It makes sense to offer it to the 95% of surfers on your site on PC so you save on banwidth. Every one else can stick with 'ole faithful MPEG.
Real can suck my fucking balls.
Quicktime is ok, but you may as well go for MPEG which people know and trust and WMV which almost everyone already has the plugin for.

BRISK 10-14-2003 02:45 AM

I just took a 243mb .mpg file and encoded it into a 93mb .wmv file and the quality is exactly the same.

Matt_WildCash 10-14-2003 02:54 AM

They can if they install the latest windows media player, I had a chat to one of members of our site and he was on Mac. Said all the WMV & mpeg's worked just fine

Matt_WildCash 10-14-2003 02:56 AM

Real sucks & qucktime is the only thing i've found that completely locks and crashes XP everytime I play a quicktime movie in my browser, and i'm on latest codecs, installs and high speced XP machine. It totally locks XP for a full 6 minutes of alt ctrl deleting it drives me crazy when people have plugin quicktime movies loading in the browser. WMV and mpeg is the only way to go.
