Alcohol delivery service, my new idea

I live in athens, GA which is a huge college party town. Some friends and I have often discussed about opening an alcohol delivery service. It would make a killing. I know there are a few out there. Anyone know of any?

What do you think of the idea? Would you use it?

We'd probably do it in conjunction with a local package store and we'd sell beer, liquor, kegs, cigs, coke, redbull...anything someone might need for a hard night of partying. We would have a min amount, say $20 per delivery.

We'd probably only have to work from like 7-12 each night too. Lot of liablity probably though.

You know you need a liquor license right?>

Dugmor 10-12-2003 04:44 PM

What is the distance you will deliver ?

Zach 10-12-2003 04:45 PM

Oh yeah, that too. I left out a few things. We are looking into the local bylaws right now. Our slogan would be "we bring the party"

Probono 10-12-2003 04:45 PM

I suggest you check local and State laws before you get too excited.

rooster 10-12-2003 04:46 PM

id also guess that its hard to get going, otherwise companies like dominos would definitely be delivering beer with the pizza

Since its such a small town i'm thinking no more then a 20 miles. Athens is pretty compact, 33k students in a small area.

Turboface 10-12-2003 04:47 PM

Zach - You could make some quick, easy money doing that, but just make sure you have some money stashed away for bail.

:winkwink:

goBigtime 10-12-2003 04:49 PM

omg why didn't the liquor stores in your area think of that?! - you sir are a genius!

detoxed 10-12-2003 04:51 PM

better check ID's or the cops can setup the easiest sting in the world

Zach 10-12-2003 04:52 PM

These services do exist, so I know it is possable. Beats me why we don't already have it hear. We are meeting with a lawyer and the owner of a local liquor store soon to discuss this.

Its either going to be 110% legit, or nothing at all.

WiredGuy 10-12-2003 04:54 PM

before looking for slogans and marketing tactics, look into the legalities of this. I doubt it's as easy as it sounds. Getting a liquor license is not easy, let alone one for delivering alcohol versus a restaurant or bar. Then you gotta ID everyone you sell to, and respect the bilaws for time of day you sell the liquor, etc. etc.

Point is, check the laws before getting into slogans...

Would anyone actually use this?

I have used the service that is in my area a fair bit in the past... u will be attracting the underage and the afterhours partiers. I think u will find that the legalities of it will keep u out of it.

What would your liability be, both civilly and criminally, if, let's say you delivered liquor to someone already fucked up and something happened to them as a direct result of them drinking what you delivered.

Aren't liquor stores liable if they sell liquor to someone who is obviously intoxicated in their estimation?

If I visit Venice again I'll be calling them :thumbsup After dark Venice really sucked for finding late night food -- they had a late-night place called "Van Gogh's Ear" but they shut that down... They had a Denny's that sucked in Santa Monica -- I used to go to the 24/hour place across the street from it...

AllisonWonderland 10-12-2003 08:02 PM

There's a strip club here, Diamonds Cabaret, that went nude after some locals tried to get their liquor license yanked. They turned into a private club (something like $5 a year for a membership), ages 18 and up. It's BYOB for 21 and up, and they store your shit in the cooler for you. Of course, they charge a "corking fee" to serve your booze to you so you are paying out the ass to drink your own stuff, but you get nude broads and booze. They mark your stuff with your membership number, and will keep it for a period of time. If you don't carry your own in, you can place an order from the carry-out next door, who will deliver it. Of course, the same guys who own the club own the carry-out :1orglaugh

They have been doing this for a few years and have had no legal problems. They are also widely acknowledged as the classiest club in town, it's no dump. Now THAT's a business idea.

We have that in my town, it's called Speedy Bottle. It's been around for over 10 years and the liquor laws are insanely anal here so there's got to be a way to make it work. I think the main thing is to be 100% above-board and legit, no screwing around and bending the rules.

Good luck! :thumbsup

brand0n 10-12-2003 08:12 PM

you would make a killing here.. but im pretty sure its against the law..

is delivery huge in the LA area? i was staying at a hotel in century city less than a year ago and i found this book at the mall with like 50 different resturants that deliver. around here you can get pizza and chicken if you're lucky. beer is unheard of.

Morgan 10-12-2003 08:19 PM

dont mean to burst your bubble but it wont happen. i wish, but sorry.

Bliz 10-12-2003 08:26 PM

I used to get kegs and cases delivered all the time in College Park, MD - University Of Maryland.

Best part was the fact that I was under 21 much of that time.

:glugglug

grogan 10-12-2003 08:28 PM

we've got em at DePaul

the owner told me about 40% of the orders are people underage (I'm one of them, but I'm so nice he thinks he remembers seeing my id)

Burtman 10-12-2003 08:32 PM

We use it every Friday night, pretty much. We golf and go back to a friends house and they always forget to bring beer. I think its about $10 more and its a Taxi company that picks it up and brings it over.

Here's an article on Dial A Bottle from '93, so they have been around awhile.

Herb Kornfield 10-12-2003 09:13 PM

There are a ton of beer distributors here in the Philly area that deliver over a certain amount to your house, like at least a 1/2 keg of beer...............

Hard Liquor is a whole different ballgame as far as the law is concerned.

Fletch XXX 10-12-2003 09:15 PM

i can order a fifth of jim beam and have it under 30 mins.

there is something scary about that.

evildick 10-12-2003 09:25 PM

A guy I know started one of those locally. It didn't take long to get started, he was making about $25,000 a year in cash, and he was cleaning up on Air Miles too, because he would purchase all the booze from the LCBO on his Air Miles mastercard, so he would get double Air Miles on his purchases.

When it came time to start hiring some help and doing things legit (like paying his fucking taxes) he said fuck it and sold it to someone else.

If you have the population to support it and it is legal where you live I think you could do OK.

lightswitch 10-12-2003 10:06 PM

Shit, In MT the Taxi drivers will pick up anything you want, Booze, Cigarettes, Coke, Whores, Jar of peanut butter it dont matter.
