The <a href="http://www.kerio.com/us/kpf_home.html">Kerio</a> firewall is free for personal use.

Juicy, go out and buy a copy of Norton Internet Security 2004 (make sure that it's NOT 2003), it'll cost you $69, but it's a great program. You'll have both the 2004 editions of Notron Firewall and Norton Anti-Virus. I love the Anti-Virus program because it now has a spam blocker, which will sort all of your potential spams into a separate email folder in Outlook, which is a great feature.

I was looking at that, I just need the firewall , I already got the antivirus stuff

richard123 10-12-2003 07:04 AM

I use zonealarm + XP no probs.

... but I did find (after 8 months of ownership) that I had a stick of faulty RAM.

Another good hardware test:

http://www.passmark.com/products/bit.htm (use the shareware - no need to pay just for one test)

TheSaint 10-12-2003 07:07 AM

zone alarm is indeed a piece of shit. A couple years ago it trashed 2 pcs of mine, requiring a format c:.

There is a sorta useable firewall built into xp.

But why not spring $39 for a hardware firewall; all windows software firewalls are a very bad idea that hark back to the day when a firewall costs $799, not $79.

The great thing about buying that is that you can also get the newer version of the anti-virus and get a new 1 year license, which is nice.

HOWEVER, I guess that you could just buy the firewall on it's own also and save a couple of bucks. Just remember 2004 version if you do decide to get it. A lot of places still have the 2003 version laying around.

Kicker 10-12-2003 07:10 AM

Zone Alarm is da best

I am using 98ME

jimmyf 10-12-2003 07:32 AM

I use ZoneAlarm and a router. never had a problem with ZoneAlarm. This best firewall is hardware

rooster 10-12-2003 07:39 AM

i had a problem with zone alarm crashing my computer. I tried every fix they reccomended on their site and couldnt correct the problem. Finnaly just had to cut my losses and uninstall it.

Phoenix66 10-12-2003 07:57 AM

ZA works fine with my XP....

Peaches 10-12-2003 08:01 AM

Zone Alarm didn't like a lot of my programs and constantly hosed things up.

Get a router - better security, no messing with the software. :)

Ice 10-12-2003 08:10 AM

Im running Zone Alarm Pro on XP and have had no problems. It works better than when I had Black Ice installed. Im also running a Linksys router with hardware firewall :thumbsup

Materialist 10-12-2003 10:24 AM

Kerio Personal Firewall, without a doubt.

It is freeware for personal use, otherwise it has a small fee for corporate use.

BLah... why are you people still posting crappy firewalls you have to pay for.

http://www.agnitum.com/download/OutpostInstall.exe

FREE. YOUr allowed to develop modules for it.

I chanllenge any of you to try outpost then go back to your old firewall.

unconnected 10-12-2003 10:34 AM

you got the blue screen as well as shit?
Jesus christ, did it just start oozing out of your disk drive or what?

I've gotten the blue screen on win2k once, but never on xp, and I have definitely never gotten any shit out of my machine before either.. So I would have to say today just isn't your day

I had a few blue screen on XP since I installed the piece of shit.
So never say never:winkwink:

TheViper 10-12-2003 10:54 AM

Blackice has some leaks too. Do a search on google with the keyword "leaktest" and run that tool on your machine. It will test the actual firewall installed.

webgurl 10-12-2003 11:49 AM

i used zone alarm for a while it does the job but has annoying features :2 cents:

dnsmonster 10-12-2003 11:57 AM

Since Windows 2K the IP stack is so powerful you don't need any freaking 3rd party firewalls. You can configure all the filtering/blocking without it. Just read the manual you lazy bastard.

KRL 10-12-2003 12:21 PM

I use Mcafee Firewall V 4.0

They also have this version online

http://us.mcafee.com/root/package.asp?pkgid=103

natas 10-12-2003 12:34 PM

Zone Alarm fucked up my XP as well, totalled it.

Crashed all the time, programs went funny, some wouldn't work.

Piece of shit :2 cents:
