flat screen monitors
Am thinking of upgrading from my 5year old 21" sony monitor to a 19" flat screen... Apart from taking up less room on the desk, is the picture quality that much better ?
Also does anyone use two flatscreen monitors with windows xp and if so any problems ? |

The flat screens I have tested has not been better.
The only reason I see to have a flat screen is that they take up less space on the desk. |
You mean flat panel or LCD display right?

LCD's are good for normal web surfer and programs, but if your going to be doing photoshop or movies or anything graphical then stick with a normal monitor.
I purchased the Philips 170S4 17" LCD and im happy with it, but it doesn't give the same smoothness that comes with a normal monitor. |
My CRT days are over. I dumped the 3 I had in my home office for flat panel LCD's.
Once you use an LCD its hard to even look at a CRT again. The new flat planels can do 16.7 Million colors, so I don't buy into the statement above that they aren't good for graphics. Baloney, the top designer in the biz does his stuff on a flat panel. Images look incredible on an LCD. The colors are simply gorgeous with the backlighting that LCD's do. Its like looking at chromes on a slide viewer. Text is crisp and perfect. If you are on Windows XP be sure to toggle in the display properties effects then Clear Type (instead of Standard Type). This really enhances text on a flat panel even more. Plus they take up no room and aren't bulky looking on your desk like CRT's. Samsung's are the best in my opinion. Although they all look great. Some are just a tad above when you place them side by side. Envision's line is excellent in terms of value and performance ratio's also. |

the problem I have with my LCD is that whenI scroll down a page it kind of drags. It's hard to explain exactly but it is weird... |
i have a ViewSonic VG900b, and i love it. used to use a 20 inch trinitron. CRT.
|
just havent been able to like the quality of image on LCD's
needs lot of improvement to catch up with the CRT's |
one year ago, I switched from a 21" NEC that I've had forever to a Samsung 191T. Simply no comparision... the LCD blows away that CRT anyday. IF you go to an LCD... don't go cheap. The upper end Samsung's are amazing.

thanks for the replies.. Will have to go to the computer store and take a real hard look at some of the high end 19" Samsung's...

i haven't been impressed by Lcd's yet either.

My 19" Mitsubishi 900u CRT recently burned out (It was the best monitor you could get when I bought it) and I went out to look at replacement CRT's. I saw all the Sony models and the Viewsonic flat CRT's but I ended up coming home with a Mitsubishi NXM76 LCD. The current LCD's are nothing like the ones I saw even a year ago.
The most important things when getting a LCD are making sure it has a < 20 ms response time and better than 400:1 contrast. Also, get a DVI capable one. I have mine hooked up via DVI and I get a perfect distortion free digital image. Once you use it you can't go back to CRT as you see just how much even the best CRT blurrs and distorts everything. The only CRT advantage is contrast, but that will not stand long. I'm going to use this one for a bit, and then get the new Sony SDMX73B LCD as soon as it's available. |
