Smart people please tell me what computer to buy

I'm going to pick up a new box for myself today, what should I get? I can't really get a Mac, although Windows has made me want one, because a couple of the specific programs I have to use to run my company are not available for it. So, that being said, what brand should I go with? What kind of specs should I be looking for? What's the best store to go to in Canada? In the past I've had a tech build me my computers, but I've moved away from my tech's so I'm on my own. Please keep in mind that I'm an old man now who's let himself get out of the loop when it comes to hardware.

And what's the most kickass monitor available now? I can't believe mine still has 3 dimensions. I mean what is this, 1999?

Any help will be much appreciated. :)

DellHome - Dimension 2400 Desktop with 2.2.2Ghz Pentium 4 Processor, 15" LCD, Altec Lansing ADA215, 40GB HD, CD-Rom for $474 after Rebate plus Shipping and no tax.

chowda 10-10-2003 01:59 PM

ColBigBalls 10-10-2003 02:05 PM

YOu want a good comp.. do this..
Go to a small company store.. some namless little shop.
walk in say what you want the comp to do and you will fork up 3k for him to make it..
pick the parts you want in it. The ones you buy at future shop and shit are made off an assebly line and a good % are fucked when you get em. I find the small guy give better service hands down and if you need something fixed you dont have to send you pc to the pc fuckup doctor in but fuck nowhere

GL :2 cents: :thumbsup

Ok thanks, are the Dimensions better than the other two kinds?

newegg.com, build your own. It's not hard, it's like a puzzle.. just put the pieces where they fit :)

Mainly the custom software that we have for various things.
Also, is there a remote admin program you can use to log into Windows servers from a mac?

Probono 10-10-2003 02:31 PM

Unless you are a PC geek and love build your own stuff. Buy a Dell, good value and hands down best service

buddyjuf 10-10-2003 02:42 PM

AMD Barton 2500+ (runs as fast as 2.5ghz)
ASUS A7N8X-Deluxe (so you dont have to buy a soundcard, a lan card, extra usb slots, firewire, etc...)
Any Brand 512mb ram (Im guessing its enough)
Any Brand Geforce4 4200 (best bang for the buck)
a good 48X Cd-Rw and/or Dvd-rom
Im guessing 60gb harddrive is enough for you?
finally any pc-case will do :)

total price should be around 700$ for a kickass system :thumbsup

Herb Kornfield 10-10-2003 02:47 PM

Dell....

I have 2 of their Dimension 4500s for the last year and they kick ass totally.

P4 2.0 Ghz / 512 MB RAM / 80 GB HD / CD burner and flat screen monitor.

KRL 10-10-2003 03:13 PM

If you don't need the DVD burner this model is the same except for that and down to a 120G Western Digital instead of the 160G in the one above for only $619

Not really. For the newest motherboards you need different power supply and case.

if you want to buy a prebuilt one http://buyabs.com/ has the best prices on the net

qwe 10-10-2003 05:24 PM

You waisting your own money when you buy from dell, futureshop, radioshack and shit like that. Find some chinese store which takes only cash and you could build amazing machine half price less then from big companies, but i'm SURE you will not do that, you will go and blow twice as much money, so my advice is pointless. :glugglug

Cassie 10-10-2003 05:27 PM

i would have said a dell or micron in a heartbeat BUT, i just got this brandy new toshiba satellite with a 17in monitor, 64mb graphic card, the works....and i LOVE it. :thumbsup

Why would you say that? Just because I'm stupid with hardware doesn't mean I'm stupid with money. :)

If your win programs can run on a P-III or less then you can run virtual PC on the mac and be fine. The new g4 / g5's with osx will give you mac + unix + pc (with virtual pc) ...
