this truly saddens me. :(

i'm not sure why he didn't fight the charges though. seems with his money he could have kept appealing for years and years at the very least, and then got off with just probation and community service. i mean look how many chances robert downey jr. got.........

eroswebmaster 10-10-2003 11:06 AM

That's a damn shame.

I to this day still don't understand what he did that was so wrong...it's not like you can't go into most major cities and find a head shop.

if he's going to jail for that, then how come i can go down the street and buy a $500 10ft 8 person party bong, and it's okay all of a sudden?

Torn Rose 10-10-2003 11:27 AM

He did his last stand up show last Friday in East Lansing Michigan, Really funny show, and we got to talk to him and get pics with him at the end of it.

He and Shelby (his wife of over 30 years) are really funny, only they hacked on Cheech a lot, and made us all wonder if they really like him or not.

Shelby opened the show and than they did a routine together that was funny as shit.

He did say as soon as he is released they are doing another Cheech and Chong movie

Said they oew over $100k to a lawyer, and since he lost the case, they will ahve to pay more.

The Official "Free Tommy" site is

What state do you live in...and what is the state law in respect to the sale of drug paraphernalia? Different states have different laws...and then there are federal laws.

Because you cannot go and buy a "Bong" you can only buy a "Water Tobacco Pipe"

Yes it's only a play on terminology but that play on terminology is all that needed to be legal.

Try asking the guy at the store for a bong ... he will show you the door quickly ... but ask for a water pipe and you'll get a good response.

magicmike 10-10-2003 11:41 AM

When asked what he thought about feds coming down hard on stoners, he replied, "I feel pretty bad, but it seems to be the only weapons of mass destruction they've found this year."

:1orglaugh

Damn terrorists.

ThunderBalls 10-10-2003 11:43 AM

What I'm trying to understand you illiterate fool..is what law did he break?

As has been pointed out and as I pointed out in my initial post you can find a head shop in most if not all major cities.

So why can I walk in and by on of Chong's "bongs" down on Las Vegas Blvd, or in Arlington, Texas etc..etc..etc.. but he's going to jail for selling it on the net?

No fucking kidding...I think anyone who's ever actually purchased a bong knows that.

Once again why was Chong arrested?

Why was his "glass" called paraphenilia. I've seen his site and don't recall anywhere that it stated it was for illegal purposes.

Why 10-10-2003 11:48 AM

tommychong along with the many other people that were arrested in that sad day of raids. many of them were selling thier product over the internet as "bongs" rather then as "water pipes" and as said above, thats kind of an important catch in the smoking glass industry.

did he do something wrong? no. was it illegal? technically.

but the question remains.... does a bong being shipped in the mail across state lines scare you?

call your fucking congresmen and tell him to get his head out of his ass, and help direct america in the right direction. with an economy thats down as far as outs is, im sure there are millions of other things to do with that cash. then lock up stoners.

It's not necessarily "drug paraphenalia."

Shit man, give me 2 minutes I can make a bong out of a coke can or 2 liter bottle...does that make every single plastic 2 liter bottle "drug paraphenalia? No.

I can go to just about any store and buy a scale that COULD be used to measure weed, coke whatever.

However if it's just a kitchen scale it's not illegal.

So once again, why is Chong in jail? How did they classify what imo are pieces of art drug paraphenalia?

I doubt he would have been stupid enough to put on his site "for the purposes of smoking illegal substances."

\

I don't recall Chong ever calling them "bongs." I only recall them being called "Chong's Glass."

Not saying he never did...but don't recall it and this is all I"m trying to pinpoint is if he actually used "bong" or another word that would deem his glass "parephanalia."

I would like to believe with his experiences over the last 30+ years he would have known better, or would have obtained legal advice when developing his site.

basically he is in jail for 4 reasons.

1. the current administration wanted to make an example of him because he is famous. The prosecuter in the case even said she was disgusted that he has become rich buy "glorifying drug use"

2. when he was asked in court what people used his water pipes for he said himself that he thinks some people use them to smoke pot.

3. they found some pot on the property where this stuff is made.

4. he fell on the knife for his employees. from what I understand it was agreed upon that if he pled guilty they would not prosecute any of the people that worked for his company so he was a man and stepped up and took one for the team.

Saddam is loose, osama is loose, they say that there are possible as many as 50 terrorist cells activly working inside the US boarders but I'll sleep better tonight knowing tommy chong is off the streets.:feels-hot our leaders need to get their priorities right.

Pleading guilty does not mean shit.

You know damn well people plead guilty all the time to avoid lengthy sentences...and while you're at it why don't you ask yourself why he was the only one out of everyone arrested that has to serve time.

EVERYONE else got home detention...but he gets 9 months in prison.

Thx man that clears up things.

#1 That was pretty obvious, however I did not know about 2,3, and 4.

If 4 is true then he's a stand up guy IMO.

I have a complete understanding of the fact that if you break a law then jail may be one consequence. I also have a complete understanding that if one does not like a law...any law...then one has the choice of bitching on a BB or become an activist and make an effort to have a law changed. People that were activists got laws passed and people that are activists frequently get laws changed.

Why 10-10-2003 12:08 PM

whoever said he wasnt selling them as bongs has never heard of a "chong bong" apparently.

yes he sold them as bongs just as JBD and the others did.

i do also recall they were shipping them to states where there are no headshops, or at least areas of states that have no head shops.

Honez 10-10-2003 12:11 PM

<rant>

I can walk into the local Trails stores here in Phoenix and on the shelf, they are selling "Chongs Glass". I am not sure how he was labeling them on his site, but if he was selling them as 'bongs' then that is all that was needed to make him a whipping boy. I agree if you break the law, you pay a price but, what happened in this case just stinks. Tommy Chong was not tried as a John Q. Public who mislabled his merchandise. He was tried as an actor who made his living and I quote, "through hyping drug use and flouting law enforcement, both in his films and through his Website" And he was tried and convicted by a bunch of hypocrites that put forth a squeaky clean image with their happy spouse and their 2.5 kids and after they prove to the world just how rightous they are, they send their wives home alone to down vodka and 5 different types of prescription drugs while they go out and spend the tax dollars they collected from adult webmasters, on crack whores and underage boys.

i like the debate on the word. Who knows, maybe in the near future we'll discuss if "teen" is a legal word to use in a porn site or not.

ZakAttack 10-10-2003 12:44 PM

he supposedly has like millions and millions of dollars he's gotten out of different investments, not from acting, I'm surprized he couldn't get some great lawyers to get him off easily...

Mr.Fiction 10-10-2003 01:07 PM

Assistant U.S. Attorney Mary Houghton contended that Chong earned his fortune through hyping drug use and flouting law enforcement, both in his films and through his Website.

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmp...11&u=/eo/12671

The Justice Department are admitting they went after him because they didn't like the message in his movies.

A vote for Bush in 2004 is a vote for A-s-h-c-r-o-f-t and his anti-American policies.

This case is so twisted. The American legal system is out of control. You would think that judges were inhuman robots instead of human beings with the way judgements are levied against people.

Really? My sister worked in a headshop for about a year and she was forced to remove people from the store and refuse sales if people mention the word "bong".
