DVD RW question

Hey,

Stupid question of the day.

Can I use a DVD RW disc to store "regular" files. If I can, can I use my CD writer to do so?

I noticed the DVD RW have 4.5 gigs of storage. Would be real nice to use 1 DVD RW instead of many CD R's.

thx

Ray, yes ya can.

2 differen't types of DVD RW disks.
- and + kind.

Make sure you get the one thats compatible with your drive.

I back up all my sites this way now.
Alot easier than all those other CDR disks.

When you bought the disks they would have told you if they are + and - ... Best bet was to get a dual format burner.

Ive got dual ( + & - )
My understanding is that 90% of dvd players will play (-) where there will be 10 % that will be a bitch about it.
Having A dvd burner that does both will ensure that alll dvds can be played on virtually any player.

BTW a while back i posted about dvd burners and this is the one I got http://shop.store.yahoo.com/liveware...rmashnecn.html its in Black

Picked it up for 175$ canadian and it burns 4x Discs ( + or - )
2x takes 25-30 mins for 4.7gb burn
4x takes 15 mins for the 4.7gb burn

Good luck

If you want to store files then DVD-RAM is a much better choice, as it is sector based. You can get drives which do DVD-RAM and DVD-RW, I think some also do both +/- versions of both formats.

I use DVD-RAM for data backup on my PC, and also my DVD VCR uses that format.

I use DVD-RW to make up test video DVDs before I burn permanently to DVD-R.

Ray- I have an HP 200e and I really like it. Much, much easier than CD's.

It won't write to dvd-r or dvd-rw, however. I do everything on the +rw just so I can reuse them, but if it's something that I'm giving away to someone, I use the +r since I figure they won't be copying over it. So far no one has had any trouble reading the discs on their computer. For CD's, I still use the -r and -rw with it.

I guess it depends on what you'll be doing with the DVD's. Not using the -r and -rw's hasn't been any trouble for me.

Hey guys, thx for all the great replies.

My first post I wrote "stupid question of the day" It should of been "stupid question of the year"

I thought I could have backed up my sites on a DVD RW disc with my CD burner. I dont have a DVD burner.

Yea your better off investing in a DVD-RAM drive. Look into getting a Panasonic LF-D521U. You can store up to 9.4gb per double sided cd as well it supports other various sizes.

DVD-RAM,DVD-RW,DVD-R,CD-R,CD-RW
