Visit www.dpreview.com , select the options you need, select max. price, press enter, you get a whole nice list with cameras, read reviews. Then buy Canon 10D.

Depends what you're aiming for.

You've got a few choices when you go digital, and a few considerations to make. Personally, I've jsut gone back to film.

1] What will i be shooting for - online, or for print
2] What type of resolution do I need
3] What type of result do i need - ie, reality, quality, etc
4] How much am i willing to pay
5] What's the fucking difference?
6] Can my camera be used to anything else.

1] If you're shooting for print, then you need something with a lot of resolution, ie, megapixels. You'll be looking firmly at the high end nikon DSLR or the Canon 1DS / 10DS. Seriously, for model shoots, most professionals use medium format cameras with slide film.

2] Similar to above. If you're shooting for web tho, you'll want something like 1024x768, and basically any camera can do that.
Sony's 'prosumer' range, like the sony f717, or 828 would be good.

3] Similar again. If you'rwe looking for amateur stuff, there's no point spending a fortune, because the resutls will be 'too good' for what you're looking for :D

4] Should be last, but hey. The canon 1DS starts at 15000AU for the body alone. You need to be sure you want this thing, and know that you'll use each of its functions.

5] Ok. The 1Ds without the doubt, the best digital SLR on the market. Why? because it's the only fullframe 35mm camera. That means, whhatever lenses are put on, will have a 1:1 focal length factor. wtf does this mean? It means that other cameras on the market have a CCD / CMOS sensor that is a ratio of 35mm, and so any lens you put on will have a multiplications factor in its focal length. Meaning, you spend $1000 on a 17-40 F/4L wideangle zoom lens, stick it on a canon 300d, which has a multiplication factor of 1.6x, and your lens turns into a 28-64mm lens, which is worth about 200$

The upshot is, that if you are totally professional, and need a DSLR, you'll know you needto get it.

6] Can i use it elsewhere? IS the camera good enoguh to take on my holidays? (this is important :D) If i get something complex, can i shoot photos of christmas :D

In summary, the best dSLR on the market is the Canon 1Ds. Prepare to pay a fortune for it.

If you need quality photos, but don't need an SLR [which you would need specific reasons, ie above, for getting] get a 'prosumer' camera, like the sony 828, the canon g3/g5 etc, which are great choices.

I've recently changed from a sony f717 to film, simply so I can get a fullframe SLR. If you want to see the power / quality of the sony f717, check out http://quantum-x.ice.org/photo/ to see what it's capable of.

Hope it helped :D

You're safe with canon, because you know the investment of lenses will suit their forthcoming models.

with a prosumer, you dont ever have to worry about that. It's a neato package.

Nikon D100
do not fuck around with any other model
dont waste your time...buy this and take the time to learn it

quantum-x 10-08-2003 02:49 PM

depends which way you swing. If canon didn't own the digital market, it'd be nikon all the way :D
