if you're going to make posts with only one word in it... you're ratio of proper spelling to screwed up spelling should be higher.

Yeah, I was going to mention that... how Canada held off the invading (the US does this a lot, ya noticed?) United States long enough for Britain to dust off Napolean and come burn down the (now called) Whitehouse. But he would have just called me a liberal and figure he won the arguement.

I was also going to mention this....
"on December 18, 1939 -- the first Canadian troops arrived in Britain. By the end of the war over 40,000 Canadian fighting men would be killed."

and how we had won some key battles there... but he'd call me a liberal again and figure he won the arguement.

I was also thinking of mentioning how Canada has the largest contingent of forces currently in Kabul Afghanistan.... but I'm sure he'd just call me a liberal and figure he won the arguement.

Seems I just can't win :glugglug

Funny how the word "liberal" has evolved from the 1700's to today.

The British burned the White House. They set sail from Britain and everything.

BTW .. The War of 1812 was started by the US for not much reason at all. I think the origin of the term "War Hawks" is from that war. No one lost the War of 1812. The peace treaty was signed on equal terms. You'd have a much better case arguing the US lost in Vietnam since it didn't achieve its objectives.

actually, if you had read my response... the US was invading Canada. They decided that it was useless to have a bunch of french people taking up half the of the great lakes... the US should have all of the great lakes for themselves. So they started advancing.

Canada just had to hold them off long enough for Britain to win their war and get here. And Canada did just that for a very long time, despite being out manned and out gunned.

So in that respect, even though no one "won" really.... I consider it a Canadian victory because they achieved exactly what they had set out to do.

Yes, I did read your response. I was replying to Altima who's claim was that the US lost the War of 1812.

Sure, I see your point. That makes sense from a Canadian point-of-view. And from the American point-of-view the US won major battles at the end of the war that reversed the tide of the war and so it ended with an equitable peace treaty.

The Germans won more major battles than the Allies did in WW2 if you totalled them all up. Does that mean they won?

Ok... well, if you read that we held off the mighty United States by hiding.... managed to prevent the US from taking over our lands by staying as quiet and hidden as we could... then.... yeah, I guess we did.

What a brilliant strategy... you're obviously a much smarter guy than I am.

I'm sure you know the difference between surrendering and not surrendering. The Germans unconditionally surrendered. The major battles at the end of the War of 1812 forced Britain to withdraw. If the Germans had won major battles at the end of World War II to drive back Allied troops then we could talk. They didn't.

Uhmm.... ok, I agree that the US won some major battles at the end, but driving away Britain? Hmm... it wasn't so much as driving them away as it was them just leaving. It was over.... it was done. You see, Britain wasn't invading the US... they weren't trying to take land. The US was invading Canada. There was no need to keep pressing.

Do you really think that the US stood a chance against Britain's army at the time? If Britain really wanted to, it could have continued on :winkwink:
