R.I.P. World Wide Web

<b>I'm back</b>

<b>R.I.P. World Wide Web</b>

<i>"First they came for the chat rooms and I did not speak out because I did not use chat rooms. Then they came for the bulletin boards and I did not speak out because I did not use bulletin boards. Then they came for the websites and I did not speak out because I did not surf those websites. Then they came for me and there was no one left to speak out for me."</i> - Fillmore Slim, 2003

It's happening. The Internet as we know it is changing. The free flow of ideas and information that the technologically elite have subsisted on for the last decade is coming to an end. The World Wide Web is transforming into an increasingly regulated place where privacy and community take a backseat to so-called security and the increased segregation of the Internet.

Considering the present federal administration I'm surprised it's still kicking.

I can't decide whether its incredibly nerdy and lame or very cool that you are quoting Moby Dick within the context of a Star Trek movie....

Thought Control: It Does A Body Good

unconnected 10-03-2003 03:15 PM

As long as the USA doesn't have juris-dick-tion on the rest of the world we will be fine.. you will just end up with less and less business being done with US based/hosted companies as everyone flees to an open minded society not controlled by paranoid hypocritical bible thumpers

JDog 10-03-2003 03:18 PM

Fuck the US! They wanna control everything. We don't even have freedom of speach anymore!

either way, the sentiment stands true... these fucking bible-thumpers/though-police will be the first ones up against the wall when the revolution comes..!

With apologies to Winston...

I have, myself, full confidence that if all do their duty, if nothing is neglected, and if the best arrangements are made, as they are being made, we shall prove ourselves once again able to defend our Internet, to ride out the storm of stupidy, and to outlive the menace of tyranny, if necessary for years, if necessary alone. At any rate, that is what we are going to try to do. Even though large tracts of Internet and many old and famous Sites have fallen or may fall into the grip of the Anti-Technologists and all the odious apparatus of Luddite rule, we shall not flag or fail. We shall go on to the end, we shall fight in the Congress, we shall fight on the courts and on TV, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the ether, we shall defend our Internet, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the patents, we shall fight on the obscenity charges, we shall fight with the card associations and the censors, we shall fight for the public opinion; we shall never surrender, and even if, which I do not for a moment believe, this Internet or a large part of it were subjugated and bankrupt, then the Internet beyond the seas, armed and guarded by the multitude of nations and cultures, would carry on the struggle, until, in God's good time, the New World, with all its power and might, steps forth to the rescue and the liberation of the old.

Elli 10-03-2003 03:33 PM

You're only worrying about the Throught Police now?

You know, if China can prohibit umpteen million people from using the internet without being monitored, then you can be damn sure the US can.

And come on, if this were to happen, would you actually leave the country in protest? Or would you just get a job and settle down? Either way, the US government wins: either the radicals leave of their own accord (you can't start a revolution from outside the country) or they join the masses in submission and cease to be radicals.

There would be no revolution.

You guys need to look on the bright side. Think of all the new jobs the Thought Police will bring to this country. The economy is gonna be boomin!

Heil Bush!

See the thread about people who watch Fox for their news. Why would they revolt against a leader who is doing such a great job in their eyes?

The media cannot create make the public support a leader. Just look at the Soviet Union.

Elli 10-03-2003 04:29 PM

I think they already have, but maybe I just talk to the wrong people.

If Bush APPEARS to be doing a good job, and enough of the right people PRAISE him for doing a good job.. who's to say he isn't doing a good job? It's all in the spin.

Remember that reporter was fired on the spot for insinuating the American military underestimated the Iraqi forces. ie: He put the wrong spin on the situation.

Remember how Clear Channel banned the Dixie Chicks from being played on their stations? That decision affected hundreds of media outlets across the country.

Even if it IS a personal or coroporate decision independent of government influence, the resulting effect is that of glossing over the government's shortcomings and encouraging the public's support of the government.

If that's not what making a leader is, then please explain.

FillmoreSlim 10-03-2003 06:37 PM

Colin Powell is the Secretary of State.

His son, Michael Powell, is the chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

If that isn't state-sponsored media, I don't know what else is.

Fuck the base, ALL YOUR MIND BELONG TO US.

Huh? The FCC isn't the media. The FCC is the government agency that oversees the media. Are you saying you're shocked that someone in one part of government is related to someone in another part of government?

I thought Americans hated communism.
Wake up! You're taken over by a communist regime!

Grab Orvel's novels 1984 and Animal Farm and read them.

Strictly controlled society leads up to creating drones, working cells and consumers for the increased benefits of the small %% of rich people.

Tragic for a country like USA.

That statement is either way over my head, or way under it. I'm leaning towards the later.
