What's the point of having a military these days anyway?
Isn't the point of the military to keep people out of your country?
LOL The military is just stupid. Who exactly is going to march into every town in America? It's way too fucking big for that... If we're so dependent on a governmental hierarchy -- it's time to wean the babies from the big motherfucking tit... There's going to need to be some restructuring eventually because our "founding fathers" could never predict advancements in transportation and technology... Any engineer/designer knows that a hierarchical system is inefficient, counterproductive and vulnerable... that's exactly what we're living in. Seems like we have the technology and resources to dissolve this association between the "USA" and the "Military" -- we already know that you get what you pay for... Let the US military represent itself for what it is -- a mercenary army... If you've got something of value, you'll need protection -- it's simple. That's the way the world works anyway and we can all agree on that -- so why all the flags and patriotic bullshit... Behind the US Government, Walmart is the #2 employer in the USA -- in a sense, Walmart is like a country within a country... What if Walmart decides to rent out apartments near the stores? I think I heard Disney is doing this sort of thing already and it's really popular... Maybe this type of thinking and the world's fascination with pop culture will put an end to patriotism... I'd venture to say patriotism will die off and pop-culture will take over due to advances in communication... without communication you could be scared as a nation into thinking there was some invisible enemy out to get you -- but now even know when a hurricane is coming a week in advance LOL... |
Oh

in these times it seems the militarys primary purpose is to oppress the citizens of this country and jeopordize their constitutional rights.

All I can say is 1 in the head and 2 in the chest.

When Clinton spoke here at the university he told everyone somthing like this: "It will be up to this generation to solve this globalization problem." Interestingly he looked at the whole world -- put the whole world in context and looked at the big picture and put the whole system in question -- because as we can see it's breaking down because our borders don't really mean shit anymore -- because of advances in technology! People all over the world are reading this right now -- that's a fundamental shift! For all we know Bin Laden is posting on GFY :1orglaugh

The point of having a military is to be able to use force or the threat of force to impose the political will of the state upon all enemies foreign and domestic.
That's the point. Whether or not you think the point is a worthy one is a different issue. |

The "state" could be made irrelevant with advances in transportation, communication/language, and trade/money...
Not sure if that will even happen until everyone in the universe has a cell phone glued to their head... |
Dopes really shouldn't post topics.

You think that there are imaginary enemies? Do you have any connections with the outside world? There are 6 conflicts going on right now.....not including some areas that have been in constant low level conflict for over 10 years.
In the whole 5000 years of recorded human history, if you put together the 2 months here and 1 month there......there has been a total of only ELEVEN years when there hasn't been a war somewhere on the planet. But you think that cell phones, pop culture and the internet will make us all sing Cum-by-a together?:1orglaugh (actually, there is a chance that it will happen, but don't plan to live long enough to see it. It's going to take more that 50 or 60 years to overcome 10,000 years of evolution pal) |
utopian ideals for sure, id like to see some of it happen..but people are just too greedy.
the army is in place so that whenever somoene doesn't agree with your ideals, then you can say..."what?!? you want to go to war?!?" :winkwink: |

Give up our military?
First of all our economy would collapse. Second of all, history has shown he who has the strongest military gets to pretty much call the shots on this planet. |

Sure, but what do you have to do with these conflicts personally? Are your interests at stake? Are you really worried about some army marching into your neighborhood? You can watch the news all day but nobody really cares because you're just not important. Quote:

I'm definitely not worried about some army marching into our neighborhood because we do have a strong military (that and the second amendment helps!:) ) There are plenty of small countries that don't have strong militaries that get overrun by other countries......it happens ALL THE TIME. I'm aware of my place in the world, my lact of importance is just as valid as anyone elses :Graucho Quote:

The purpose of the military has been abused since its inception..
Just as now, as they send reservists to Iraq.. Not at all what the reserves are for, but the govt. needs bodies over there for the iraqi bad guys to kill.. Bush is now sseing his popularity decline rapidly.. Gee.. wonder why?? |
