Why do people say...

-- begin rant --

Why do I hear people say:

"Let's watch a DVD"

OR

"Let's rent a DVD"

That's like saying "Let's watch a VHS"

You're watching or renting a VIDEO, not a VHS or a DVD, that's just the format it comes on.

You could also just call it a movie, like "lets watch a movie"

Either way, I don't think saying "Let's watch a DVD" makes as much sense. Back in the VHS days nobody said "Lets watch a VHS", so whats the deal?

because the term "video" became synonymous with watching a VHS tape. Upon the emergence of a new medium, i.e. DVD, a new term was required to avoid confusion. We realize you're on the cutting edge but lots of people actually do own DVD players and VHS machines concurrently. Finding oneself in such a household and casually suggesting "Let's watch a video" only begs the inevitable question, "Which format do you prefer, VHS or DVD?"

Thus, by attaching a new term to the new medium, we eliminate unnecessary circle jerking and are able to cut ot the chase.

Make sense now?

Is that really a question though? If you have both a DVD player and a VHS player, why would you ever go rent a VHS tape instead of a DVD (assuming the movie you want is available in both formats)?

I hate when people say "surfing the web"...

you're not surfing, you're sitting on your ass in front of a computer. And there is no web... spiders make webs, not computers.

yes.... assuming.

Alrighty then.... there are more of these so-called "videos" you speak of on cable, network, and satellite as well.... so when you wanna watch something on Direct TV, do you also say, "Let's watch a video"?

It is a video, right?

Yeah, I dunno how that term came about, I remember people saying that back when 14.4kbs modems were the fastest shit out there, and "surfing" sure as hell isn't an applicable term to that waiting game that it was.

I would probably say "hey, there's a good movie on TV, wanna watch it?"

watching a dvd is only fun when you put it in the microwave.

I find it's not really necessary to say what the format is at all. It can usually be assumed from the context of the situation. I've never once said "Let's watch a DVD" and yet I've gotten by just fine. I dunno why it irks me when people say that, it just does. :helpme

that's what I say as well.... I'm just arguing the point. :)

Why make an exception for one medium and not another? If you're going to be specific about a movie on "TV", then why not carry that through to DVD, or Satellite, or Cable, or VHS.... hell, why not say things like, "Hey, I got this great tune on CD, wanna listen?" And generalizing is just as bad.... if you're going to lump them all into one term like "video", then be fair to the other technologies too. "Hey, I got this great video/audio compilation on DVD format, wanna view and hear it?"

Now that's politically correct baby.

I say, if you feel you must specify, then specify across the board, not just your personal favorites. Other wise, leave it at "movie" or "tune".

Unless the person in question was already insane, in which case your efforts would go unfulfilled, or perhaps the insanity you would create might negate the current insanity in which case both would cancel eachother out? :Hollering

I just say, "shall we watch a DVD or fuck?"

She always responds with. "Don't you mean, 'let's watch a movie?'"
