DVD ripping?

what's the general concensus on that? Similar to like a music CD? If you bought and paid for a movie, is it within your rights as the consumer to rip pieces of the DVD, like say, if there's a music video in the bonus section or something and you want the audio.... cool to record the track to MP3, or will the DVD ripping police come and drag you off to federal pound-me-in-the-ass prison?

I believe it's legal to make a "backup" of it as long as you own an origional copy.. But why you'd want to is beyond me, it takes so bloody long and the quality of the copy is shit.

i just wanna record some of the music.... saving it to mp3 format. Quality is great. I can record in raw wav, transfer to my audio software, amplify and clean it up, and save to mp3.... the quality of that is fine. I don't know about how good ripping video turns out.... never had the urge to try that.

I don't *think* it's legal since you need to use a program like decss to "crack" the encryption.

If you bought the DVD, i am sure you can copy the music to your hard drive etc.

not for recording the audio.... just queue it up and play in PowerDVD, and use audio recording software. Record as it plays.

some of my friends do it all the time, and no source of concern.

Amp I have a friend who does DVD authoring for a living. Next time I talk to him Ill get a program off him that will make this easier for you.

Not sure, but I am fairly certain there is an easier way to just grab the audio tracks etc.

;)

I got a new laptop, and although it has a dvd/cdr drive I still find burning dvds very comftrable.

2. the quality isnt bad at all if you know how to rip

3. I dont have to take a ton of movies with me.
I could just store 15 or so (at 3-5 gigs) on my hardrive.

3. It saves better and allows me to watch more movies.

4. When I go somewhere I dont risk scratching or loosing my original dvds which happens often.

It's easy (like if you want to steal your friends stuff, which I'm guessing you don't) but takes too long.

Everything is cheap and takes 2 seconds to buy on half.com

Amputate Your Head 09-30-2003 11:32 AM

I'm just guessing here of course, but I'd like to think as long as you don't offer it up on the p2p networks, or try to repackage anything for $ gain, it'd be okay...... ?
