Hummers fully tax-deductible this year

Washington Post

"'Allow me to introduce you to a fabulous opportunity,' Chris Thorpe, a sales representative for Hummer of Alaska, writes in a promotion letter. 'A tax "loophole" so big you could drive a Hummer H2 through it!

Imagine being able to purchase the #1 large luxury SUV in America today ... and receive a deduction for the entire purchase amount from your taxes this year!

Thanks to the Bush administration's recent economic stimulus package, small businesses and the self-employed are eligible to deduct the entire purchase cost of new equipment up to $100,000 the year of the purchase.

The Hummer H2 qualifies for this IRS Sec. 179 deduction by its gross vehicle weight of over 6,000 lbs.'"

PM2 09-29-2003 11:58 AM

so... which other cars weigh more than 6k? Like the offer, but not the hummer.

slapass 09-29-2003 11:59 AM

This has been around for awhile. Bush did not start this write off. He might have raised it.
Why am I defending GW?

SleazyDream 09-29-2003 12:00 PM

if I was american I'd own a hummer tomorrow

Fletch XXX 09-29-2003 12:03 PM

Sad.

Kids need text books and better teachers and all these alcoholic war mongers can think of is tax write offs.

webair 09-29-2003 12:05 PM

There are 38 SUV's in the category of "light trucks over 6,000 lbs".
Navi's , Escalades , Tahoes etc....

WiredGuy 09-29-2003 12:18 PM

If only I was in America, that Hummer would be in my parking lot tomorrow !

Fletch XXX 09-29-2003 12:18 PM

Hmm so many single moms have to take the public bus to work nowadays youd think they would have some kind of thing set up for single families who may need a car for school and work.

But naaaaah, we could NEVER take care of the little man.

Mr Pheer 09-29-2003 12:42 PM

Damn, I sold my H2

cluck 09-29-2003 12:46 PM

Great, more of the government's money going towards free shit for people who don't need nor deserve it.

If you can legally steal a hummer from the taxpayers and drive by a homeless person in it and not feel bad I feel sorry for you.

BradShaw 09-29-2003 12:49 PM

MANY trucks have a Gross weight over 6,000. MANY people are taking advantage of this loophole.

Thrawn$ 09-29-2003 12:52 PM

More big trucks, more oil needed, more money for bush :thumbsup

Yea it is stupid loop hole, it was meant for farm equipment and transportaion companies. But I got to say I worked hard for my car, home and toys and I deserve what I work hard for. Dont hate the player, hate the game.

Mr Pheer 09-29-2003 12:58 PM

wow, can tell how many webmasters in this thread arent in the top tax bracket yet

:thumbsup

In fact, after I read the portions of the tax code about this and feel confident I'm going to go and get myself an H2. Probably within a week or so. I'll post pics (with naked women too), but it's not like it's a Lamborghini or anything.

NetRodent 09-29-2003 10:43 PM

The original hummer was somewhat classy. The new hummer is horribly ugly.

fletcher 09-29-2003 10:44 PM

:1orglaugh You mean the Bush administration finally did something beneficial?

that thing is pretty ugly

TurboTrucker 09-30-2003 12:33 AM

Looks like you can just deduct the full price at once instead of depreciating it. Still has to be a legit business purchase though, if you aren't buying it to use exclusively for business use you can't deduct 100% of the cost. Well, you know - technically.

Sama 10-01-2003 09:22 PM

Lexr,
Still planning on it?

boneprone 10-01-2003 09:43 PM

shit...

Lease any car and you can write it off in our biz..

You dont have to rush out abd buy a tank.

brand0n 10-01-2003 09:44 PM

heeelllooo write off

BluMedia 10-01-2003 10:51 PM

Ok so if you drive an suv you are supporting terroism but then you can write it off, WTF what kind of monkey is running this country oh wait a minute I just remembered. :1orglaugh

Jer 10-02-2003 05:57 AM

What does "tax deductible" really means?
1 - You wont pay tax on the money you use to buy the car
2 - You can deduct the money spent on the car off your tax (ie. if you owe 60k to the IRS in taxes and buy the hummer for 50k - I have no idea how much it costs - you'll need to pay just 10k)
