Blimey! Croc eats 12 year old boy alive!
TEHRAN, Iran (Reuters) -- A crocodile snapped up and ate a 12-year-old Iranian boy who was swimming with friends in a river near the Pakistani border, newspapers reported.
Environmental Web sites Saturday identified the creature as the Iranian Short-Muzzle Crocodile, known by the people of southeast Iran as the "Gando," which figures in local myths and legends.
A Gando can grow up to five metres (15 feet) in length but is often nearer three metres and has a reputation for timidity.
"This is a very rare and surprising attack," the director of the local environmental office was quoted as saying.
"Either the crocodile was very hungry or the swimmers rubbed it up the wrong way."
He said about 250 Gandos inhabit the waterways of the Bahu Kalat reserve in Iran's southeastern border province of Sistan-Baluchestan.
