Local Computer Business

I am sure at least a dozen people that read this board night and day have had or currently own a computer repair business-

Of course it sounds silly to me, but I just talked to a guy on the phone that " did $500k in sales last year " and " turned away 2/3 of clients because there are so many "

Thoughts?

My thoughts:

Open such a biz - sell computers, repairs, and upgrades- and continue my internet work in the office while some kids do the dirty work, and I oversee it-

I am sure there is much more involved - but storefront on 'main street' from a friend = about $400 a month, and I do believe it is 2100 sq ft.

This town is growing like hell, [fastest growing county in the US] so perhaps its really worthwhile. I turned the idea down two years ago when my parents suggested it, that is exactly how long this guy has been in business, and I told him " oh, damn, guess I missed the boat? " him: " Nah, there will always be room- computers are just getting more common, and thus more are breaking down ".

Or just have him reffer his overload to you.

I do that with some people here.

400$ for a storefront with 2100 square feet?

:eek7

Please tell where you live...lol

Carlito 09-26-2003 11:43 AM

Yeah the store is junk tho, needs some repair - like AC, carpet, etc.

The guy does it out of his house, and I know where those houses are... very expensive. I`d rather not do it out of my garage because that seems cheap - and a storefront is so inexpensive.

Don't need a storefront just a place to work from in your house thats seperate from the rest of the house.

Central Valley, California. Fastest growing county in the US. I think this town has gone up 20k in the last three years.

I used to own a computer store (89-93) and it was all good until I had enough computers sold in the neighborhood to idiots that my phone was constantly ringing with people's asinine questions.

I eventually shut down because I couldn't handle all the fuckwits needing their hands held every time they hit the power button on their computer.

It would probably be better now with Windows and all, but fuck I hated the support end of it.

Thats why you need someone to answer the phone and direct calls where they need to go.

"oh you need tech support ... great ... can I have your credit card please? ... yes the charges are $1 dollar per minute... ok thanks have a nice day"

Thanks for all the replies and ICQ's - very interesting.

Anyone else want to share an experience?

I'm kinda doing the same thing right now. Except I down own/run the business. I'm just a tech that does most of the hardware work like building new machines and repairs on older ones. My boss is cool, he lets me do my online work when I have no hardware to work on.
