Is this another joke?

Sarah_Jayne 09-26-2003 05:01 AM

heart attack...all the news pages having 'more soon' on them. Man, wouldn't have been the 80's without him. He was only 54.

Does it feel to anyone else like the end of an era, with all these people who were icons for so long all dying at once?

Theo 09-26-2003 05:25 AM

addicted to coke maybe?

Paul Markham 09-26-2003 05:31 AM

Guy was a year older than me, guess I had best start looking after myself and enjoying life. :(

Odie 09-26-2003 05:35 AM

what´s going on these days, everyone´s dropping like flies...

didn´t he sing that song "simply irresistable"?:(

Sparky 09-26-2003 05:41 AM

I remember when I was at the age of wankin off, he did those couple of Music Video's the ones where the girls had sheer tops on so that you could see their boobs, had never been seen before on BBC's Top Of The Pop's ...

yup, and the video is one of the most memorable images of the 80's

Deb 09-26-2003 05:54 AM

http://www.cnn.com/2003/SHOWBIZ/Musi...mer/index.html :(

Everyone seems to remember him from the 80's, but he also had a few hit songs in the 70's as well. Tunes like: "Hey Hey Julia/Sneaking Sally Through The Alley" & "Give Me An Inch", among others. He also formed the group Power Station with the remaining members of Duran Duran.

I recall seeing him in concert back in 1979 and it was one of the best shows I've ever seen.

R.I.P. Robert, you'll be missed.

Zebra 09-26-2003 06:59 AM

Damn. I played his Riptide tape in the '80's till it wore out.
Dude was sophisticated and definately not into the rock lifestyle.
I recently bought the second Power Station album. His voice hadn't lost any of it's smoothness over the years.
Sad to see him gone so early. :(

brand0n 09-26-2003 07:03 AM

=[

escorpio 09-26-2003 07:13 AM

He personified 80's cool.

advertiser 09-26-2003 07:25 AM

With powerplant he did a great version of trex(mark bolans) get it on bang a gong

Jamdin 09-26-2003 07:32 AM

I have been feeling very old with all these celebrity deaths...

Goodnight, Mr. Palmer, RIP... :(

TheGoldenChild 09-26-2003 07:38 AM

Robert Palmer was a dear friend of mine- Worked with him in the mid eighties whenever he came to Ohio he'd call and leave passes and tix for me.

Not only was he my hero growing up, he was a mentor.
I recall a time in 1989 when he played the Newport Music hall in Columbus- we went back to the Hyatt with his drunner Dony Wynn and his bass layer who used to play with marvin Gaye and had a blast. He would speak of his custom made suits he had flown in from Milan and his childhood in Malta.

he was also portrayed as a great family man which was shocking because he took his mistress on the road with him on all his US dates-

Oh well he was a guy after all.
My favorite albums by him were " Clues" " Riptide" "Sneaking Sally "

and Heavy Nova.

I am really bummed by this news and no he wasn't a coker- he was a "smoker"

In fact he introduced me to Dunhill cigarettes- now it's clear I need to stop smoking them - I don't wanna die at 54

:-((

RIP
RP

Herb Kornfield 09-26-2003 07:44 AM

Very sad day indeed for music. Robert Palmer was a great talent.

RIP Robert.

Zebra- The second Power Station album features michael des barres as their lead singer-

Nowhere near the quality of the first album -Tony Thompson formerly of Chic playing drums was definitely the best pasrt of the band that man had a sound like I have never heard before
HEAVY funk drummer
and of course Nigel Rogers producing that hit record made it a smash.

BradShaw 09-26-2003 09:15 AM

KB, maybe you should go back to music biz. Or did your bullshit game catch up to you there as well?

Dravyk 09-26-2003 10:25 AM

Too young to die! Damn! :(

Brad, you're turning into a full-time stalker these days.

loverboy 09-26-2003 10:28 AM

another sad story for the entertainment bizz.... :(

berg.the.red 09-26-2003 11:40 AM

DAMN !!! that sucks ...

RIP :(

Tala 09-26-2003 11:50 AM

:(

Didn't Mean to Turn You On was a great song....Simply Irresistable was a staple of the 80s nights I used to team DJ with my friend Matt Mann...damn, it's a shame he's gone.

:(

SykkBoy 09-26-2003 11:53 AM

Damn, horrible news...

I loved when Palmer dubbed his music Heavy Nova, a combination of heavy metal and bassa nova....

He once mentioned in an interview that it was odd that he loved Megadeth and his kids didn't

ELP was Carl Palmer, Robert Palmer the singer is the one that died - heart attack at age 54. Guess the countdown is on for me.

MagicksAntics 09-26-2003 12:03 PM

Damn it...it sucks when musicians and actors that you actually remember from your childhood (not re-runs) start dying like this. I remember singing along to 'Addicted to Love' using hairbrushes as microphones while babysitting my niece. Guess it's time for another reality check.

Does anyone out there know where the hell all the TIME is going?? I'm throwing down years a lot faster than I would like to. WTF.

:(

happens in threes

Centurion 09-26-2003 05:39 PM

I heard about it on the local noon news here in Seattle (Kirotv7)
What was kinda weird is that the news announcer added after she said he had died from a heart attack, that "He had just gotten a complete good bill of health from his doctor."

Hmmm...
