Reliable Hosting/ XXXhosting

Why was I able to TelNet in to my web server and view everything on it.
I was able to transfer files from one site to another, view customer directories, Pretty much steal from any of the site hosted on the same box.
I am by no means a hacker, I do not have any true skills to crack a Linux box, this leaves me to wonder what the true skilled Unix people can do?..

Jesus what a flipping mess.

Worst hosting company I ever dealt with, I asked them why I could get into everybody esle's stuff when I used them and they said it was monitered:1orglaugh Shit I even got a good domain through them and sent the money to have it renewed and they didn't do it and I lost the domain, they offered me 10 bucks to make up for it:ak47:

Hi Sassyass.

At Adultxspace.com users on a shared server don't get ROOT access, also by default shell access through telnet is disabled.

If you like to talk, contact me via ICQ or email (see signature).

Thanks :thumbsup

I can't beleive that they would allow this.
isn't this part of the "How to secure a web server 101", course that you can get at your local community college?

Whoa!

Give us a little background on the situation?

which package do you have?
I'm assuming a virtual account, which one?
did you ask for telnet/ssh access to be enabled?
what was their response when you brought this up to them?

I've got 2 servers at XXXwebhosting and have never had any problems. I've got a dedicated and a colo over there (need to split the load - I have servers on several networks, including my own)

It's just tacky to come into a bashing thread and spam.

I have virtual on a linux and a NT server.
I can get in to either. I don't have anything worth stealing (I don't run surfer sites) but EVERY other site on my server is a surfer site. TONS of content hanging out in the breeze.
No, I did not ask for telent or terminal service access, even if I did, would it be wise to give me access down to the root?
I was thinking about posting hte sites that i have access to but then I figured not everyone would be honest and thieft could happen.

Reliable called me, ran me through some tests to show me what the securities are and how they track who is telneting in to their servers.
I was wrong about being able to move files.
I have been with reliable for over a year and I have not had any trouble with their services. The telnet was just a big shock to me.

Sharky 09-25-2003 02:31 PM

hehe. This is why it's best to THINK before you open your trap on GFY and other boards. A simple phone call showed you the error in your ways

PbG 09-26-2003 01:48 AM

You would be surprised how many hosts who advertise here have telnet enabled.
We don't allow telnet and ssh is restricted to your directory.
