The Real Cost of War
Bill Berkowitz, September 23, 2003
A few nights ago, we took our granddaughter, who recently moved back to Oakland from Oklahoma, to her middle-school orientation. Eleven years ago I sat in that very same auditorium with my daughter -- who was then entering the seventh grade -- and listened to the principal, her assistant and various representatives from the Parent's Association talk about the students' new and exciting journey.

Oakland's schools have never been financially flush and the school district's budget woes have accumulated over the past few years. With Oakland schools now in financial receivership, I expected some belt tightening -- but the news was far worse for my granddaughter and for our small corner of public education:

The average class size has once again risen to between 28 and 32 students;

There is only one counselor for the entire student body, all 980 students; and

The only electives available for entering sixth graders are Art and Band.

Bah! Kids don't need any of that fancy liberal un-American book learnin'

Give them a Bible, a rifle and a flag to wave. That's all they need.

pauliewalnutz 09-24-2003 06:58 AM

move to Afghanistan or Iraq I am sure they have more electives their for children.

Bomb Making
Suicide Solutions
Martyr Training

among many others:1orglaugh just busting I know the schools are hurting right now, but after they attacked us they knew that we would hurt our economy to take them out we just have to rpdovie for our kids future and if we let things like 9-11 slide, there might not be any future at all for our kids.

Not in this country. Even the conservatives like it. What does that tell you?

12clicks 09-24-2003 07:24 AM

Extractions: http://www.phrma.org/publications/ba...s/federal/impo rt.phtml The Canadian federal and provincial governments ration health care and discourage new medical technology; the result is protracted waits for medical care and lower quality care. According to a leading Canadian think tank, over 200,000 Canadians are waiting for surgical procedures. The waiting list grew 13% in just one year, (from 1997 to 1998). On average in 1998, for example, Canadian patients waited: 13.3 weeks for treatment from a specialist (6 weeks to see a specialist, and nearly 7.3 more weeks to receive treatment). Waiting times increased 12% in a single year. 11.4 weeks for an MRI an 18% increase in a single year. 25.4 weeks for orthopedic surgery.

I think this means if you blow out a knee, you get to hobble around on crutches for 6 months waiting for surgery.

that socialized medicine is sure good stuff! If my knee goes, I'll be damned if I want to be treated the same day. that's simply un-canadian

I'm not Canadian so I can't speak for their system. Here in Australia there are waiting lists for elective surgery but anything that is essential is taken care of right away.

The system here is very popular with the public because it works.

BigFish 09-24-2003 07:34 AM

Welcome to the world of economic downturns and upturns. pull up the graph of the history of the United States GDP, output deficit, surplus etc. See the dips and hills? Since all these people have so much time on their hands calculating the 'costofwar', why don't they take it a step further and calculate the direct and indirect costs of a single portable nuclear weapon detonating in the city of Los Angeles, CA. The economic impact on the entire world, if that ever happens, would be devestating.

come again?
http://www.theage.com.au/articles/20...434986004.html

"Thousands of Australians continue to die of cancer because of a shortage of radiotherapy treatment, more than a year after an inquiry called for urgent action on the national shortage.

The report by former federal health minister Peter Baume said waiting times were too long, staff shortages were critical and people were suffering needlessly.

"Services are likely to fall even further behind in a few years if nothing is done urgently," his report said.

Ahhhhhhh... looks like we've had the conservatives in for too long. Seven years and public services start to suffer. Must be time to throw them out.

So what happens to people in the U.S. who need radiotherapy treatment but can't afford medical insurance?

KRL 09-24-2003 07:47 AM

You think CostofWar.com's tally is offensive and frightening?

Try this one on instead.

They are treated anyway.
You see, here in the US we pay to get the very best medical care on demand and those of us who can't afford it get it anyway.

Matt_WildCash 09-24-2003 08:23 AM

This is going to fuck with Bush's election the Demo's may just get back in yay :)

rooster 09-24-2003 08:41 AM

I wouldnt count on that. The election is a year away. Right now you got 10 potential democrat candidates going all over the country bad mouthing Bush because they have no other platform, and that rehtoric is being shown on the news every night.

Yeah, right. :1orglaugh

http://www.amsa.org/tnp/myths.cfm

"MYTH: Community hospitals and many doctors take care of everyone regardless of ability to pay.
FACT: Community hospitals and many doctors do provide some charity care; however, 15 percent of uninsured pregnant women are refused prenatal care when looking for a provider. Uninsured pregnant women are more than twice as likely not to receive the standard number of prenatal checkups before delivery. Uninsured hospital patients are 29 percent less likely to undergo coronary artery bypass surgery and 45 percent less likely to undergo a hip replacement. " :1orglaugh

are you somehow comparing this with this:
"Thousands of Australians continue to die of cancer because of a shortage of radiotherapy treatment, more than a year after an inquiry called for urgent action on the national shortage."

silly kid. Are you comparing deaths in a country where EVERYONE HAS HEALTH CARE to some doctor visits and procedures being less likely for those who have NO HEALTH CARE?

I guess when you look at it that way,......no, I can't finish. too funny.
