Amp Home Improvement Tips #1

been remodeling the guest room here for months.... we're in the final stages now, painted all the doorjambs, doorjamb trim, and doors, (replacing one interior door and rebuilding the closet completely).... and in a moment of blinding stupidity, we decided it'd be cool to give the walls a coat of "Venetian Plaster", heavily burnished, to go witht he Hawaiian Island theme we got going throughout the room. The look is perect.

The Issue: This shit is like fucking goo. Has to be applied to the walls with a fucking trowel. It takes F-O-R-E-V-E-R. We just gave the bathroom in there the first coat. (yes.... two coats are needed).... after that shit dries, we give it another coat. Then it needs to dry again. THEN, the topcoat.... (only for the bathroom, not the main guest room).... then 7 days later, we burnish.

holy fucking crap.... this is a LOT of fucking work, and this shittin' fuckin' goo is expensive as fuck. Can only DIG out a little at a time cuz it dries so fucking fast. (It doesn't pour like paint.... actually have to dig it out of the can with a fucking stick)....

I'm sure the final result will be as we envisioned, but I will never..... EVER... put this shit on again, in ANY room, for any reason.

Spunky 09-20-2003 08:57 PM

Yes it does take time to dry but dont you think it looks great?

Amputate Your Head 09-20-2003 08:59 PM

for those of you scheduled to be guests here in the near future... we are busting ass trying to get the guest room finished, but be advised, it is currently under heavy construction and may not be finished prior to your visit.

be prepared to sling some fucking paint if you're scheduled in the next 2 months.

cluck 09-20-2003 09:02 PM

I've discovered in recent years, that my designer skillz do carry over to interior design..... and in fact, I've always been VERY good at interior design, which may explain (in part) how I ended up being a designer in this world..... it's in my blood. It's my calling. I design things. It's what I do.

Why couldn't I have been made something cool like a rockstar or something.... lol

Amputate Your Head 09-20-2003 09:23 PM

my fucking fingers and arms are numb from troweling that shit on all day....

The Tip: Don't use Venetian Plaster, unless you're into lots of manual fucking labor.

BradShaw 09-20-2003 09:34 PM

Try sponge painting.

I haven't been invited...but I'd be happy to sling paint. Sure as hell beats putting a new roof on the house.

sponging is gay. That's the type of shit they do on Trading FUcking Spaces. I do not live in a trailer. And I do not settle for anything less than the fucking real deal. That goes for remodel jobs, leisure gear, audio gear, etc, and all the way to my work.

The rest of the world can settle for that lame shit..... I want the real deal. The difference in effort is indeed enormous, but the difference in results are even more dramatic.

That is how I live my life Brad. Second best sucks penis. And I will never be there to know what that feels like, in any facet.

Gemini 09-20-2003 09:41 PM

It's never over Amp. Next year it might be the paint in THAT room should be or...

Anytime you are up for serious reno, talk to me. I know HOW to do it but can't do it alone. I've been working on the hubby to finish the basement jack work so he can put stairs back in for months. But he's in a serious funk and sits out back talking to our pets. :(

<<---learned long ago to pay an expert to do it and know it'll be nice when it's done. Less frustration..and besides.. I'm never completely happy with what I do myself.

I saw the pic's of your place Persian... looks great....:thumbsup

BradShaw 09-20-2003 09:48 PM

Amp, I had my house totally repainted when I bought it. All I know is there were 2 hot chicks here for 2 weeks with sponges and rags and it looks good! But, the walls already had the texture, which I assume is plaster.

In a few weeks going to paint my garage floor at the lake house. Thats about as bob villa as I get. Oh yeah, and I jump started the Ferrari today as well!

oh sure.... I had my handyman here all last week prepping the room.... he ripped out walls and re-drywalled and mudded most of it... fixed up a ton of shit.... fixing light fixtures, switches, faucets, etc.... fucker will soon be retiring off the work I got lined up for him....

But I figure paint/plaster is pretty much a no-brainer though... no sense wasting good money on that when I can do it better myself.

Gemini 09-20-2003 09:58 PM

Brad... use a textured paint! Harder to sweep but alot easier than a slip on a floor!! You can also buy additives for texture for whatever paint you like best. :)

Loryn 09-20-2003 10:00 PM

Okay that was a good call. Yes beauty is in the eye of the beholder......
I wish I could hang around your house and feel your presents.....
I would make your house everything your wife and you felt That's what makes a beautiful home.

or mix sand into the paint.... great for concrete for providing a no-slip surface.

I haven't done much on the inside to mine, yet. When they built this place they used flat paint ..and all one color (antique white). Well I can tell you flat paint and boys don't do well together. Now that they're older I'm ready to do some work upstairs first.. (main floor). Some rich paint colors. Possibly change out the painted crown moulding and regular mouldings for wood (I like the look of a framed room). Because my place is so open there's only a few rooms I can totally paint, ceiling and all, and not deal with abrupt color changes mid-ceiling, etc.

Gemini 09-20-2003 10:10 PM

Normal silica based sand will NOT mix right with alot of paints Amp. (ie: too much dust etc etc will discolor the color you want) or will not adhere correctly.

Hence you buy the correct mix that will work with said paint. :winkwink:

I live with a man that could design and build your whole house from start to finish and lest us NOT forget that some where in my late 30's I degreed as an architect. ;-)P ;-)p

He btw got 4 degrees and practiced for more than 20 yrs. lol

next on the list is the master bath.... gonna be major renovation. But the biggest project of all is going to be the addition of a whole new room over the existing sundeck, deck expansion/redecking, game room addition, kitchen remodel, pool addition, full bar, and landscaping/terrace/waterfall.

looking at next year somtime before I even begin to think seriously about that though, because of the way it all ties together here, it all has to be done at the same time.....

trying to finish the lower floor, uni-bathroom, washroom, laundry, office/studio, master, and guest sections first. Then I got skylights, cathedral hall/stairwell, and foyer to deal with.... all before I ever get to the big shit upstairs.

Amputate Your Head 09-20-2003 10:18 PM

just finished the remodel of the powder room in the foyer last week.... looks fucking AMAZING.....

I'd take pics, but hey... it's a powder room. Too small to capture it in a pic. Has to be seen to be loved.

Painted it "Deep Turquoise".... very Maui. Came out incredible.

this fucking guest room is killing me though.
