When Looking For A Designer

Do you go straight to their portfolio page to get a feel for their work quality or, like me, if their 'design' site isnt impressive when the page loads do you close the browser and go to another url?

There seems to be a lot of good designers around in adult at the moment but, a lot of them put absolutely no effort into designing their own site, just seems a bit freakish to me.

odd but true :winkwink:

same as mechanics hate working on their own cars...

not really strange at all.

jaYMan 09-19-2003 09:24 PM

I usually go on personal refferals...

and I shop for deals:

If this is true stick with the designer you have.

Alot of designers are so busy with orders that they don't have a spare moment to work on thier portfolios. And it seems to be a faux pas to get another designer to design your site for you even if it IS because you don't have time to do it.

sorry but i don't think you are right
we have good looking design studio as well as good portfolio
soon we will add the impressive flash header

but i agree with you that designers must have the studio designed as better as possible, to show their design skills:thumbsup

I do that, if their site isnt nice and easy to navigate I leave. Maybe I feel its a reflection of their work (?) and do not bother to look at the portfolio.

If you're looking for a good one who works reasonably, please ICQ my wife to look at a tour she just built for a contest :)

you should take at look at out site pixel work
we made our site, and are very happy with the way it looks, it's easy to navigate, and we think it shows our clients a bit about what we can do :)

D_Nell 09-20-2003 02:13 AM

I get great business from a basic portfolio site. I cut to the chase and have a good number of samples to show. Plus I conversate with clients on ICQ or over phone which ever they prefer.

I'm sure every designer is saying in the back of their mind I need to redesign my site!:thumbsup

Roald 09-20-2003 02:18 AM

I just recently restyled my site, I see it as a promo for my work so it have to look good.

The Truth Hurts 09-20-2003 02:49 AM

Some designers just can't do shit for themselves.

I know a guy that's been designing paysites and shit since 96, and has never had a site or portfolio up to promote himself.

Plus, most designer sites are usually total ass
because they either tried too hard, or aren't very
original to begin with... which usually becomes quite
clear the second you hit the portfolio.

BlueDesignStudios 09-20-2003 04:00 AM

What do you guys think of our site?

http://www.bluedesignstudios.com

We've designed it for functionality, since we update it once a month with 30+ new tours & 1000's of banners usually.

We feel that webmasters do not want to be bogged down with flashy intro's etc when looking for a designer, they rather just want to get straight to the portfolio & see the design skills.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated

Andrew

it is true that the sites are showrooms but really in the end I would care more about the sites in the portfolio. You don't want your site to be such a pain to load that people never make it to the portolio in the first place.

loverboy 09-20-2003 08:35 AM

personal refferals is one of the best way to introduce yourself in the bizz, and once you have established your name in the industry, you can't stop counting opportunites that by your way.

i know some freelance designers that only accept Western union.. wtf? The more the payment options, the more reliable a company when it comes to investing to them.

nice thread:thumbsup

e-Stefan 09-20-2003 08:44 AM

I just can imagine someone else will do my design stdio site! :BangBang: :1orglaugh

Andrew, you should know Lee loves your guys work :thumbsup

Stud Money 09-20-2003 04:33 PM

Thanks for the feedback everyone.

Kinda wondering how this turned into a free for all for designers to spam their portfolio though lol

Not to worry though we found a couple of new options for future designers now :thumbsup

Dude, wtf is up with the caps? You think we're blind? If we're all blind, then no one is going to be able to see your caps anyway. Knock it off.

iroc409 09-20-2003 04:34 PM

for me it's a time issue, but i think i'm just going to bite the bullet and do it.

heh.. i even have troubles updating my portfolio, let alone redesigning it :)
