Canadian Moving To United States

Me and a friend of mine, both self employed would like to move to the states, we know legally that we can live there for 6 months minus one day as a visitor. but the question is... is it possible to live there forever and how so can this be done?

twistyneck 09-19-2003 12:46 AM

we make american money, and the exchange rate sucks large right now, almost make the same in us as canadian.

the Shemp 09-19-2003 01:04 AM

Do you have a university degree?
Its pretty easy if you have a degree and a job to go to in the US.

according to this you'd lose 27% of your money.

muchmoreporn 09-19-2003 01:08 AM

we both have degrees but we are self employed, doesnt matter where we live.

Rocky 09-19-2003 01:10 AM

getting a work visa is relatively easy

but it's the ever elusive green card that allows you to live in the states and work at ANY profession that will take you 6 to 10 years to obtain...if you're lucky

that depends, did he have one or two testicles at the time?

if you partied with Tom when he had two testicles and he made you eat pennies then you automatically get your green card

if you partied with Tom when he had one testicle and was already divorced from Drew then you get nothing

the big question is...how many testicles would Tom have if he was still married to Drew?

sperbonzo 09-19-2003 09:42 AM

this will be really easy......Fly to Mexico....sneak across the border at night with the thousands of others.....then get a california drivers license.....then disappear into another state......use the CA driver's lic to get a a license in that state....and you're home free!:1orglaugh

fris 09-19-2003 09:51 AM

if you have a degree its no problem. just apply for a green card there is lots of sites with information. but i think the part about the self employed if you tell them that at the border they wont let you in. like if you were going for a computer job that would be ok. cause they would want IT people.

but i dont know why you are leaving Canada. its nice and all to travel to the us. we have a house down in florida and time share in orlando and vegas. and my bro has a place in phoenix. but i would never move. its too nice up where i live in canada.

but check out diff websites check on google.

These should give you a jump 'much'... Luck! ;-)

I'm not sure how that all works now, but transferring stewardship (if thats the right word) of your company and sites for a pre-determined time frame might ease the access (and make you a paid worker as well) Maybe something like a 5% net fee from your things to that person etc etc. And the balance of profits go to you. I'd vote talking to a good attorney in this area before starting anything. The INS has radically shifted lately. And no doubt they are seriously watching company formations if there is a real amount being generated (from other country sources)

I think they have enough rapists and drug dealers at the moment.

toonces 09-19-2003 10:57 AM

Just go down to the US embassy on the market and ask them for the process. They have customs and immigration officers there.

Also, you know that if you are on a visiters permit that legally you are not supposed to be making money. Big No, No that will get in the way of a green card.

Fatbat 09-19-2003 11:30 AM

Not true in both cases. Sposorship certainly helps but isn't necessary. Opening your own business and employing some Americans would also help. Having skills that are in demand would also be a big asset. A green card can be obtained in 6 months.

Go see a professional immigration lawyer and they will get you squared away with the paperwork you need.

You must have some strong movtive to want to "live there forever"!

Take a tip and realize the grass ain't greener on the other side - it does not matter if this is the US or any other place. Your comments about "immigrants" - every country has "immigrants" - tho can't see this is a "reason".

Considering Canada is like most countries, excluding the US, this gives you more freedoms to move elsewhere and not be subject to the draconian "expat" rules of the US - plus a good few other "exclusive" instrusive laws of the US. If you want to "live forever" in the US, you will be subject to those laws.

Currently, in combination with some of the laws mentioned above, the US is probably one of the most unfriendly places for location of adult webmasters and it is not exactly a politically friendly or stable environment.

Each country, including the US has much to offer - ya really gotta weigh up the "uppers" and "downers" of each. I can think of a good few places I'd prefer to live - for adult biz reasons, *genunine* freedom, good lifestyle and no taxes.

My :2 cents: :2 cents: worth!
