Broadband Web Subscriptions Up 72 Percent AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - The total number of fast Internet subscribers grew 72 percent to 62 million households worldwide in 2002, said a survey published on Tuesday. Fast, or broadband Internet, gives always-on access to the Web with speeds at least five times greater than a dial-up phone connection. "The Republic of Korea leads the way in broadband penetration, with approximately 21 broadband subscribers for every 100 inhabitants," Switzerland-based International Telecommunications Union (ITU) said in its report. Hong Kong ranks second with nearly 15 broadband subscribers per 100 inhabitants and Canada ranks third with just over 11 broadband subscribers per 100 citizens, it added. In some markets broadband can be up to 111 times cheaper per megabyte per second than the leased lines some companies currently rent from incumbent telecoms operators.
