I've always been curious about the business aspect of owning a gas station. Not with the aspect of whether or not it is franchised. But rather how much gas stations make in profits.
For instance, at $1.60 per gallon, how much are they purchasing a gallon for? Also - If you're franchised with Hess (just an example), do your prices have to correlate with all the Hess Stations in your county/city? In efforts of becoming more competitive with your individual franchise, edging out/distinguishing your gas station from the bunch.
It used to be real sweet but the margins are very tigth now. .05-.10 a gallon in profit. But if you do the whole package of snacks, pop etc it can be great just don't expect to make much on the gas part.
You dont make shit selling gas. You make money selling overpriced food/drinks/liquor/porno in your store. I've seen gas stations with beer sales topping gas sales.
gas is basically a loss leader / break even ... main profits come from snacks / carwash / in house fast food .... the moneymakers are the regional and district sales guys who determine the price the stations pay per gallon ... had a g'friend who's family owned one and would bitch about how the guy 5 blocks over would get his gas for 5c less a gal cause he was in a diff zone ....
bitch of a bus if you own 1 .... nice bus if you own 10
If you don't like your job, you don't strike, you just go in every day and do it half-assed .... its the american way!
Not to sound like a racist person, because I am NOT. But has anyone seen a gas station owned/run by anyone other than people from India and Pakistan or Turkey in the past 10 years? Seems like every gas station in upstate NY is owned and run by either Indians or Pakistanis etc. Doesn't the government find this strange at all...?
I know that a lot of them have family in this country, who are doctors, they make money here with their medical education earned from their native country, then send their money back home and then the other family members come here and open up gas stations/convenient stores.
I know gas stations are very expensive to buy, but I just find it strange that you rarely see any gas stations (at least where I am from) owned by American born people.
