Key to making money

1. you have to do what others can't or won't do.
2. it's not how hard you work, it's how smart you work

Very good thought. You don't necessarily have to be the next Microsoft to make it big. You can be a success working in small niche markets in just about any vertical industry.

If something starts making you money and becomes a repetitive task. Hire someone cheap and move on to the next project

That may work for you, but I would say look at what others due, success leaves clues. No need to reinvent the wheel, most of us are not capable of that.

just as I figured, that went beyond you

Also, there is no key to making $ in this biz anymore for 99.9% of people. If you are making money, you will make $. If you are not, go get a job elsewhere. You missed the window.

Anyone came into the biz in last 18 months and pocketed $100k?

Buy for a penny, sell for two, and if possible leverage or margin your money on that first penny.

If #1 means don't meet the established competition head-on, then absolutely. It comes down to "finding the cracks" as someone else mentioned.

As for #2: I never found it did any harm to work hard as well as smart :)

Timing and opportunity are hugely important. I built my first successful business in the early 70s simply by deciding to expand while everyone else was digging in because of the crisis caused by fast-rising oil prices. In less than 5 years I went from a shoestring operation to one of the biggest in its field. If I could have done that at all in "normal" times, it would have been a very much slower process.

And you need to recognize your own strengths and weaknesses. Over the past 30-odd years I have taken three businesses from zero into seven figures. But I hate routine and I'm not a corporate man. By the time that first business was up to $5 million annual turnover I didn't enjoy it any more and I wasn't much more than a passenger. The new owners turned it into an extension of what they already had and last year reported $650 million sales for that division. If I had kept the business, it would likely have withered from neglect.
