Christian Bale has been cast in the starring role of Bruce Wayne in Warner Bros. Pictures' upcoming Batman movie, to be directed by Christopher Nolan and produced by Emma Thomas. The announcement was made today by Jeff Robinov, President of production for Warner Bros. Pictures.

Principal photography on the film is expected to begin in early 2004. The movie is written by David Goyer and Nolan, and will follow the early career of The Dark Knight.

Said Nolan, "What I see in Christian is the ultimate embodiment of Bruce Wayne. He has exactly the balance of darkness and light that we were looking for."

Robinov stated, "Now that we've found the best person to play Batman, we are really looking forward to moving ahead with the rest of our casting, and are excited about the exceptional group we are assembling."

Bale, who first drew critical attention for his starring role in Empire of the Sun, has starred in such diverse motion pictures as Little Women, Portrait of a Lady, Metroland, American Psycho and Laurel Canyon.

He's an awesome actor... but... Batman? :eek7

thats what i was thinking too... seems a strange choice...

maybe the next batman movie will be called

"Batman : the All-American Psycho"

Perhaps the storylines will be much more dark, like the Frank Miller Batman stories. Those are my favorites :thumbsup

Better Christian Bale than some of the other actors they were considering...including Jake Gyllenhaal, Billy Crudup, Joshua Jackson, Cillian Murphy, Eion Bailey

cool, bale was great in psycho. he would make a great dark batman better than the last gag-fest. I can't believe how badly that franchise went down.

"Bateman" to "Batman" isn´t too far!

Been rumored forever they wanted to do ?Batman: Year One? in a movie.

I am somewhat glad they didn?t get the "Big Name" to play Batman, now they need to learn the lesson that Xmen and X2 Proved is the only why to do it and that is to get a Director who is a FAN of the characters and not just some name they grabbed.

That's why Xmen and X2 kicked ass, and the Batman movies were....uh.... what the fuck?

And if they are going to do it, than I say do it right and do the Joker as well. And not some fat old Joker, but a ?Real? Joker. Jim Carrey with his build and ability to make the smile and other faces would be perfect.

Just don?t let him near the writers?.

The X-men director was not a fan, although he did research the comics once he was in the project.

Also Carrey already did the riddler, so it would be a bit of a stretch to recast him...
