Teen Gets 8 Years For Cane Attack and Setting Disabled Man's Beard On Fire

PANAMA CITY -- An 18-year-old former high school football player has been sentenced to eight years in prison for beating a disabled man with the victim's titanium cane and setting his beard on fire on a Florida Panhandle roadside.

Zachery Lyons blamed drugs and alcohol, apologized to the victim and admitted his guilt while friends and family said the attack was out of character, but that did nothing to dissuade Circuit Judge Don T. Sirmons from putting him behind bars Monday.

The teen from nearby Southport pleaded guilty to aggravated abuse of a disabled person. He could have received up to 15 years.

Lyons told Sirmons that he attacked Matt Anderson, 44, in December only because he was under the influence of Xanax, a prescription drug for anxiety, and alcohol.

``It's not something I would do,'' he said. ``I had no control of myself that night.'' Lynn Haven police said witnesses at a restaurant told them Lyons had been angry with Anderson, unable to speak or walk normally because of brain surgery, because he had looked at his girlfriend.

All three left together in a car before Anderson was beaten. Lyons broke both of his arms and several ribs and tortured him by lighting his beard on fire, said Assistant State Attorney Ashley Adams. She said Lyons had a prior arrest for battery and resisting an officer without violence.

The teen attended Rutherford High School in Springfield, starting for its state-ranked team during his senior year after transferring from Mosley High School in Lynn Haven. Sirmons told Lyons he needed to take responsibility for his actions.

``It's too late to say you're sorry,'' he said.

It's true, benzo's would make you do that type of shit even without the alcohol. I used to be on ambien and trust me, you totally lose it. My parents would tell me in the morning about how I was walking around the house, or I fell in the bathroom or weird stuff like that. I'd think refrigerators were tied to my cieling, I'd go outside and run around the neighborhood. There was a cigarette burnt through the top of my TV, all that kinda shit.

It's only so long when someone who's *not* abusing them leaves their house at 3am and kills someone under the influence of that stuff. Basically they dissociate your body from your concious mind so you're essentially using the mind you dream with in the real world. Pretty scary considering you could have a dream where you're a serial killer. :2 cents:

Obviously you've never done druvs :thumbsup One of the most addicting and dangerously dissociating drugs there are. People have been known to take one perscription pill that's bigger than what would be perscribed to them(if they could handle it enough to be perscribed at all!) and wake up all bloody in the ER.

I know about drugs too, for quite some time I did alot of them and spent a good chunk of my time researching them(effects, synthesis, etc).
