This is why I will never own another cat in my life (or rather I will not let a cat own me). At least a dog will shit on the floor at least 99% of the time. Cats want to do it in the laundry basket, on the table, in a shoe, on your favorite cashmere sweater that you JUST had dry cleaned... I know how you feel, they go EVERYWHERE. :feels-hot

I think it's trying to tell you it's sick. I had a similar thing happen with our cat, and the vet told me they do that to let you know they're sick. Sure enough, the cat was sick, got meds and hasn't shit outside the litter box since.

Now pissing on the rug is another story.

My cat has only ever pissed on the carpet once. He had a kitty litter for 2 weeks, and he was house trained by then. Never had an incident since.
