if they want to start suing people, they should sue everyone who has at least one illegal song on their computer.

When I first started buying albums at the beginning of the millenium they were 1.99 to 2.49 and were we EVER so mad that they went to 3.99!!!! But then when we stole them, they seemed to have this penchance to have our thieving butts arrested!!

Complain to the record companies. If enough do it, then they will lower their prices. It surely doesn't cost as much to burn cds as it did to press vinyl and they never taken that into account in pricing. Just like when we have an oil glut, they really don't lower prices to reallllly low levels, just enough to shut people up.

Bands only make change for each cd sold. Most of them don't really care, as long as people want to hear the music that's all that matters.

It's the record labels that make the money from cd sales.

I think we should feel more sorry for stolen porn content than stolen music. The reason is that porn can be purchased in same digital form legally. The RIAA doesn't really have such as system for downloading mp3's legally, yet they complain.

i wonder if other companies will do the same and lower their prices... hmm...

Both of us mailed outr complaints a couple of years ago momo. Have you? That stuff is kept track of at least in numbers usually with big corps. I was a big time cd buying sl*t a few years ago and for many years before that. When it got ridiculous, I started turning on the radio. lol

I *do* have well in excess of 1000 cd's but rarely pay now since they got stupid with the pricing. Luckily we have so many radio stations in the area that I'm happy on any given day. And nope, we have only d/l'd some stuff to verify whom or what it was (99%) from legal bits off of sales sites, and then IF we wanted it bad enough, we went and bit the bullet for the cost. We don't even have a p2p prog on any of our stations. :)

You're confused because you're stupid. Just because you think something is too expensive that doesn't give you the right to steal it.

i used to download like crazy, but ever since i switched to mac, i barely download anymore (the p2p apps for Mac are super shitty compared to the ones on Windows)

i still don't agree with the Industry suing people... its not by suing 260 people that they'll change things...

It is there right to charge what they want. Music isn't free...doesn't have to be cheap...etc...

You honestly think it is your right to get free music because you don't like the prices? Many freedoms, but I have never seen "All American's (or whatever country) have the right to listen to music". Music is a luxury. And whoever produces that luxury can charge whatever they want. And if you don't pay for it, you are stealing.

Same as someone stealing adult content.

i think if people give a fuck about you they don't mind sending you money or buying your shit because it's more of a thank you than anything else.

musicians need to realize that they are nothing without their fanbase and by not catering to their fans they are going to make a lot less money.

people pirate music and software in part because it is inherently "bad" and "illegal" and it's just human nature to go against the grain. if you offer your music freely, granted, some people are forever going to be cheapskates. some, however, won't mind tossing a few bucks your way because they truthfully like your music.

in short, it's all about the music.

in the recording industry, its not the people who produce that "luxury" that decide the prices, its the companies

ive bought cds directly from artists more than once, and i will continue to do so

but to hell with the big recording companies.

As long as people continue to buy what they truly like then it will be ok. I love the ability to download old obscure stuff in a minute's time. I also like to preview new stuff I'm interested in but if I like it I buy it because you can't download it and sequence it the way it comes on an album not to mention I dig .wav files.

Oh, and artists do make money on record sales. The label steals most of the money from the sale but they get paid through this thing called mechanical publishing. $.96 of every album sold goes to the songwriters which is most times the artist.

Unfortunately downloading hurts the artists who might only sell 500k units of an album. That is the magic number where an artist would start to see nice money back from actual record sales. Thanks to Kazaa these artists are having a hard time selling that amount. I looked at the numbers on Friday and most of those artists are at 282k and 340k instead of the usual 550k or 600k. they would have minus downloading. Even the artists you think are doing well are selling way less than projected. Not to mention the overall business is down another 16% this year. (And some people ask me why I like the porn biz too. Heh heh.)

The biggest sellers are selling B-I-G although there's no longer an in between ground. Either you sell big or you barely break even (if that) now a days. This is causing the labels to take less chances and go with what works like mindless rap or pop princesses. You can sign one of them and hire a proven producer and you have the instant MTV material that you all love so much. If you sign a band you can only hope they have what it takes to make a hit record because you can't just hire the Neptunes and get a quick hit. That's too risky. Shareholders don't like risk.

I normally don't vent about this topic but reading CNN today just pissed me off.

The RIAA claims sales are down 31% due to online file sharing which is complete bullshit. I've seen figures that show its actually helping album sales, though i can't be sure how accurate they were.

Maybe if the music industry wasn't investing all of their money and resources into the teen "pop" niche and actually started diversifying and signing DECENT bands/singers people such as myself would start buying music again instead of just ripping off all the SHITTY music that is out there right now.

You are soo on the money with that one. I think we will see a shift in the way things are done in the next year or so. Especially after the success of artists like Norah, John Mayer, Coldplay and other sleeper hit acts that did big numbers. What's funny is that companies are just realizing that adults buy records in larger numbers than teens when they really like something!

I'd be willing to bet that lots of these song writers and entertainers do their share of sharing porn pics with their buddies...

You'll never hear that from me. Stealing is stealing and I've been saying it all along. Whether it's a picture, a music file, or a movie, it belongs to someone or some company who owns the EXCLUSIVE right of deciding how it is used. Now, you can argue that it's hopeless to try to prevent stealing this stuff, but you could make the same argument about rape and murder... Would you draw the same conclusion (that we shouldn't try to stop it)?

I Agree, I haven't bought a CD in over 5 years....not becuase I can download it for free, but because any band that is worth a shit to me releases stuff on vinyl. Fuck CDs, they cost 2 cents to make, there's no fucking way I'm gonna pay $17 for one. The recording industry is, and forever will be, on crack. They tell people what's cool, and the people believe them, it makes me fucking sick. The stand has already begun, mp3 is a revolution, and they just don't know how to deal with it...so they're gonna sue a couple thousand teenagers to make an example...too bad they have the deepest pockets of them all. Fuckers.

I somewhat agree, there are too many douchebag "rock stars" who are trying to make a living off some shitty band. The fact is that they're in it for the wrong reasons.

I've been in bands for about 6 years now, & I can tell you one of the coolest moments was when I happened to do a search on Audiogalaxy (back when it was still free), and someone had ripped our songs from our record (which is kind of a pain in the ass, if you've ever digitized vinyl)...I was pretty excited that someone liked my band enough to actually put forth the effort to do this....we got free exposure, we didn't lose money. Of course, the type of music we play would never appeal to a mainstream fratboy crowd...average people wouldn't play it at a party or a fucking rave or any shit like that.

My point is this: Assholes who care about losing money from downloads should really take 2 steps back and remember why they started playing in the first place. Because it's fun as fuck.

By the way, anybody who wants to "steal" some of our songs, lemme know....we just recorded some new shit...for the rockers.
