FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: IL AEROSPACE TECHNOLOGIES GETS BOOST FROM NEW SPONSOR AND FROM TWO ENDORSEMENTS IN QUEST TO WIN THE X PRIZE Tel Aviv, Israel (June 19, 2002) - In the quest to build the first privately funded, reusable spacecraft, IL Aerospace technologies (ILAT), the first Israeli entrant in the $10Million X PRIZE competition (www.xprize.org), got a boost today from WEBAIR Internet Development, Inc. (www.webair.com), a provider of web-hosting solutions; and from two distinguish organizations; The Experimental Aircraft Association - EAA Israel 1346 (www.eaa.org.il); and MASLUL - Israeli Students for Exploration of Space (www.maslu.org). WEBAIR will sponsor the Israeli team by providing web-development, hosting services and management tools worth $75,000. "This sponsorship is both strategic and valuable for the ILAT team," said Dov Chartarifsky, Team Leader. "WEBAIR has equipped us with the essential marketing tools to expose and communicate our project to the rest of the world. On behalf of the ILAT team, we take this opportunity to thank Sagi Brody and the rest of the WEBAIR team for donating their services and for vigorously supporting our quest to win the X Prize. Through this endeavor we're succeeding in forming a fruitful and prosperous relationship between our two companies." "WEBAIR is a strong supporter of the IL Aerospace Technologies team and the X prize competition as a whole", said Sagi Body, Vice President and CTO, WEBAIR. "IL Aerospace Technologies Negev 5 is a unique project embodying the spirit of space exploration. ILAT's fresh ideas, solid technical background, and dedication to their goals will help establish the foundation for mankind's presence in space". In addition to the WEBAIR sponsorship, the Israeli team is being endorsed by the local Experimental Aircraft Association - EAA Israel 1346, and by MASLUL, Israeli Students for Exploration of Space. "We are proud and honored to have begun gaining the support of the local aviation and aerospace community. The EAA and MASLUL endorsements are extremely significant and essential for the success of this program. It is a great asset to find ourselves surrounded by the brightest minds in the country", said Dov Chartarifsky. "The Israeli EXPERIMENTAL AIRCRAFT ASSOCIATION Chapter (EAA ISRAEL 1346) is proud to endorse ILAT and its X-prize competition project", said Mike Raviv, Organizer & Controller, EAA. This is experimental aviation at its best and we believe that, as in so many similar occasions in the past, this pioneering work will open new gates for the aviation enthusiasts at large and push the limits even further. If we'll see ordinary people just like ourselves in space in the next generation or within a few, then credits will be due to people like Dov Chartarifsky, who created the Israeli X-prize team. It is our intention to not only endorse this effort with words and good wishes but stand behind it with whatever we can contribute to its progress. Best of luck to Dov and the team." "MASLUL, Israeli Students for Exploration of Space, views cheap access to space as a critical factor in space exploration", said Daniel Rozenberg, Head Organizer and Group Leader, MASLUL. "We are very proud of ILAT - IL Aerospace Technologies, who has taken about itself to become the first Israeli company to launch human beings into space. This is a grand step to promoting space in Israel and in the world. I and the rest of MASLUL members, await the day when the Negev spacecraft will be operational so we will be able to venture into space in person." "ILAT is proud to team up with MASLUL in an effort to promote space exploration and research", said Dov Chartarifsky. "As the first Israeli X Prize team, ILAT fully supports MASLUL's programs put forward to educate students and the general public about the needs and benefits for space-related initiatives. Together with the local aerospace community we can continue to expand our country's presence in space." ILAT is developing an X PRIZE vehicle, Negev 5 (www.xprize.org/teams/ilat.html & www.ilat.co.il), that will be a self-sufficient reusable sub-orbital space vehicle capable of launching three adults to an altitude of 100 kilometers twice in two weeks. The Negev 5 is an innovative design which uses a large super-pressure helium balloon as a first stage to carry the rocket and crew capsule to the upper reaches of the atmosphere (82,000 feet) before the rocket engines are ignited taking the vehicle and crew into space. This design approach overcomes most of the atmospheric drag and allows the Negev 5 to be launched and recovered anywhere in the world, from land or sea, without the need of runways, assist aircraft, costly installations or complicated procedures. The propulsion system will utilize the latest hybrid rocket technology. To win the $10 million X PRIZE (www.xprize.org), a spacecraft must be privately financed and constructed with the ability to fly three people 100 km into space. It also must be reusable, flying twice within a two-week period. The competition's goal, endorsed by leading space and aviation organizations around the world, is to jump-start the commercialization of space, including space tourism. About IL Aerospace Technologies (ILAT) ILAT was founded with the principal objective to develop a reusable and cost effective technology aimed to transform space tourism into reality and expand the human desire for space exploration. At present, the ILAT team is comprised of 7 original team members with a combined disciplinary experience in physics, mechanics, electronics, aeronautics and material science. All team members are veterans of the Israeli Defense Forces and have worked for leading aerospace, biomedical and semiconductor companies in Israel and abroad. The ILAT team will continue to expand by welcoming additional professionals as well as sponsors, students and volunteers from all walks of life that share the same team vision.
