I'm tyring to reformat and do a new clean install of Windows ME. When I attempt to Format C: I get a message saying "Drive C; is currently in use by another process. Aborting format."

What do I need to do? Any help here would be great?

Chong 09-07-2003 07:28 AM

I'm asking for a little tech assistance here. I'm not here to discuss why I'm using ME on this particular PC. Thanks for your concern.

Upgrade to XP In the long run itll save you time

stevet 09-07-2003 07:43 AM

Youre still running Windows. Either exit into Dos mode, not just a command prompt or make a boot disk, boot from the disk (not your hard drive) and format the sumbitch!

hit it with a hammer a few times

lil2rich4u2 09-07-2003 07:44 AM

i think windows has a sort of anti-self format thing going on.

i remember having similar problems.

i think what i did was go into FDisk, delete/crete partitions, and then restart the PC with install disk in the drive.

Look guys - I can assure that spending the fucking $80.00 to upgrade to XP is not the issue here. I run XP on most of my PC's here. There is a very specific reason why I'm still using ME on this particular PC. So, if you can offer an answer to MY ORIGINAL QUESTION is would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks steve. Like I said I'm not a tech kinda guy and I am currently just going to run, command. Can you tell me how to actually exit windows ME into dos mode?

Thanks

Done that twice already but Its not overwriting the HD. All the old crap is still on there. I want to start with a clean drive.

Chong 09-07-2003 07:56 AM

you can't delete/add a new partition from within the windows install cd?

if it is an option, it will be seen when you go to start>shutdown

You need to make a start-up/boot disk first.
- Right click on a: and click on format or properties then see if you can find "make start-up disk".
- Restart your computer but leave the floppy inside the drive.
- when the floppy boots up, do a fdisk then format c:
Hope this is right:(

You are right, that is the only way to do it. You have to boot up DOS, if you boot from a CD you are most likely still booting into Windows.

If you boot and you get the Windows startup screen, you are not going to be able to format C:.

What's Windows ME?
