What is the make and model of your "dsl modem"? Also, do you have static IPs or dynamic IPs?

Why don't you want to use a router? You can pick up a Linksys router for $40.

without some type of router.. how are they all connected to the internet? if they are all thru the same connection you can network them easily.. open my computer > tools > map network drive

Just plugging in the cable doesn't magically put you on the network. :)

Chong 09-07-2003 02:20 AM

isn't there an uplink or wan port on the hub? modem > uplink or wan?

Are you planning on sharing one IP or not? If so, does your gateway machine have 2 NIC's in it?

NemesisEnforcer 09-07-2003 02:26 AM

I have the same setup in one of my offices. I use a hub to connect the other computers to the DSL modem.

What I'd do is make the XP machine be the one that is connected to the net and enable Internet Connection Sharing (ICS).

Then on the other machines, MANUALLY specify the gateway IP of the XP machine and appropriate DNS servers. To find those, simply go on the XP machine while it's connected to the net, launch a command prompt (start -> run -> cmd) then type "ipconfig /all" while in command prompt. It will give you the DNS servers (usually 2 of them).

Put those numbers in the lan card config in your other machines. Reboot.

Should work.

You can contact me by ICQ 111333 if you have other questions.

first do this to the computer where you want to get the files from.. right click folder goto file sharing

It makes a big difference weather or not you have multiple ips for use ;).

You can either
A) Buy a hub and use 3 seperate IPs
B) Install 2 network cards and a hub(internet into nic 1, internal lan from nic to to hub)
C) Go get a stinkin router ;)

Chong 09-07-2003 02:41 AM

if you bought additional IPs they would be assigned by mac address.
