NEW YORK - Jessica Lynch, the former prisoner of war whose capture and rescue from an Iraqi hospital made her a national hero, has agreed to a $1 million book deal with publisher Alfred A. Knopf.

"Many folks have written, expressing their support for me and for the thousands of other soldiers who serve their country," Lynch said in a statement issued Tuesday by Knopf.

"I feel I owe them all this story, which will be about more than a girl going off to war and fighting alongside her fellow soldiers. It will be a story about growing up in America."

"I Am a Soldier, Too: The Jessica Lynch Story," co-written by Pulitzer Prize winner Rick Bragg, is scheduled to come out in mid-November with a first printing of around 500,000 copies, Knopf spokesman Paul Bogaards said.

Financial terms were not disclosed, but a source close to the negotiations said Lynch and Bragg will divide a $1 million advance. The source spoke on condition of anonymity.

"I feel a kinship with Jessica and her family, and am thrilled at the prospect of bringing this story to the wider world," Bragg said in the statement issued by Knopf. He has been granted exclusive access to Lynch and her family.

Lynch received a medical discharge last week from the Army, making her eligible to pursue book or movie deals.

Funny how we can figure out a billion a week for war in Iraq, but, cant figure out how to help the average American citizen health coverage or help the average small business have some stability at home in these rather bleak financial times.

I was reading today we're paying garbage contractors in Iraq $3 per cleaner per day. 25,000 of them. Only thing is the contractors are scooping up the $75,000 a day and hiring kids as young as 8 to be the garbagemen and paying them $1.50 a day and they're pocketing the other $1.50. So the contractors are yanking $1 Million a month and doing zilch.

I don't see what the problem is here..... This cute, innocent girl from hometown USA got thrown into a war, went through a fire fight, was hurt during said firefight, captured as a POW, and then rescued. She might not be a hero, but it sure does make for an interesting story.

And I don't want to hear any bullcrap about Bush and all. I don't recall health benefits being a right that MUST be supplied by the government. And the war against Iraq - while costing us a lot - is much better than going through another 9/11.

Well...yes she was...or be Court Martialed and receive a Dishonorable Discharge for disobeying a direct order.

It took around 60,000 for Vietnam...Iraq is only a couple of hundred or so.

Get yourself captured because you don't know how to fight, cause you joined the Army for the college money anyhow. Go to an Iraqi HOSPITAL, get raped and beaten the fuck out of for a few days, get rescued, and then suddenly you're a hero. I was always under the impression that a HERO was someone who did the saving or did the rescuing of fellow soldiers. Since when is a HERO a prisoner of war? If anything they should've kicked her ass for being captured, not given $1 Million, or better yet, a pat on the back with "you're lucky the navy seals rescued you". This country is going down the tubes at a quicker pace nowadays...

It's like when people sue the police or fire department because they get hurt, while being rescued. If that's the case, and I was in charge, I would say, alright, fuck you, back to that position you go, and let your tough guy lawyer rescue you, because we don't care.

No she was not forced to join the Army...she was forced to go to Iraq or face the consequences for disobeying a Direct Order.

I feel sorry for her. She suffered extensive injuries and pain while serving her country in a combat zone...and she will pay a price for the injuries for the rest of her life. She derserves every penny she gets from the book and I am sure there will be a movie. More power to her.

She was not in Combat Arms. She was involved in a vehicular crash and was severely injured. Anyone that serves in a combat zone is a hero...just for the act of serving the country.

The girl suffered a traimatic experience undoubtedly. So to have lots of other soldiers in Iraq fighting against evil. She is one who didn't get captured and killed. If there is a story then tell it.

2.) If you saw someone that had an interesting life story that you KNOW you could sell, and sell big... what would you do?
