Red wine=Life-Extending Chemical? French connection?

Interesting...

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmp...ertainredwines

Biologists have found a class of chemicals that they hope will make people live longer by activating an ancient survival reflex. One of the chemicals, a natural substance known as resveratrol, is found in red wines, particularly those made in cooler climates like that of New York.

The finding could help explain the so-called French paradox, the fact that the French live as long as anyone else despite consuming fatty foods deemed threatening to the heart.

---
Scientists involved in the research say that human life spans could be extended by 30 percent if humans respond to the chemicals in the same way as rats and mice do to low calories. Even someone who started at age 50 to take one of the new chemicals could expect to gain an extra 10 years of life, said Dr. Leonard Guarente of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (news - web sites), one of the pioneers of the new research.

TheJimmy 08-25-2003 10:35 PM

I've made it a habit to knock one or two glasses of it back at least a few times a week for a while now...

the study/science on this has been going on for a while now but glad to see it's finally getting some more press and coverage...

:thumbsup :thumbsup

olive oil rocks too....love that STUFF!

PS: here's another nifty tid bit of info on redwine/reservatol & cancer...

also some scientists in France have found that applying grape products/byproducts to the skin also allows for the absorbtion of this stuff thus causing some benefits as well...

there's a few great hair and skin products out with 'grape stuff' in it ;)

Who wants to live till they can't wipe their own ass anyway? Not me...

btw, when buying resveratrol in pills, make sure that the key ingredient is TRANSresveratrol which works as described, some cheap supplements where it just says reseveratrol won't do shit.

i can recommend these two:

http://www.t-nation.com/store/supplements/rez-v.jsp (a lot more info on resveratrol on that page)

cherrylula 12-20-2011 07:35 AM

You actually get more of this health effect if you just eat grapes... lol.

Resveratrol is found in the skin of red grapes and in other fruits. However, red wine contains very little of it, in the order of one milligram per glass.

They're still figuring out the mechanism, but feel free to splurge on resveratrol pills, they're not cheap.

bns666 12-20-2011 08:28 AM

it's not that expensive, ~$22 for a 2 month supply for a real product.

http://www6.netrition.com/enzymatic_...rol_forte.html

if you take it in the morning every day with multivitamins you'll notice the benefits very soon.

transresveratrol is also a nice complementary product if you're using some tribulus based testosterone boosting supplements since it reduces estrogen and gives better t-boost.

You, sir, I value your connoisseur taste on top-heavy breasts and curvy figures. However, I challenge you to read "Tuesdays with Morrie" by Mitch Albom, then repeat your phrase....

--edit
cos I know you won't read it.... I would give anything to see the world as Morrie saw it.

anyway, wtf is this french paradox? Is it like the Italian pardox and Spanish paradox?
It's all about fat in moderation. The % of dinner tables in France (or likewise) that serve up balanced nutritious and tasty meals versus the % of American dinner tables doing the same is a ratio that is enormous. I lived for 4 years in the US, 21 years prior to that in the UK and 15 years in France and I can say without a doubt, from the experience of all the people I've met in my life is that the diet in France ranks far higher in terms of "healthiness" than the UK or US.

And yeah, beer doesn't figure much into the drinks either.
