Equipment Leasing Scam?? WTF? Why are people such losers?

This takes the cake. Someone is ordering laptops on our leasing account and having them shipped to Miami. In the end it will be Dell that gets ripped off and not us but what the fuck?

MattO 08-21-2003 08:55 AM

The only reason we found out was because they sent one to our office address and also our monthly bill went from like 200 dollars to 2500 dollars.

We just found out so we will know more soon.

Usually these kind of things start from previous employees or someone who got access to old receipts with your account numbers on them. Either way, you probably won't be liable in the end but it's still outright theft. Hope you get it resolved Rick...

Actually, Rick...it is sad, but it is not that hard.

We buy all of our office laptops from Dell (would *never* buy a server from them, btw), but I digress.....in the history of our relationship with Dell I have never talked to them...not once....and even though I own the company they have never heard my name mentioned.

A few weeks ago one of my employees hit me up at 6:30pm and said that he needed a new laptop and that he was on the Dell site and had configured one with a Discount that expired at midnight....it was a decent discount so I said, OK, I will order it for you.

I called the normal Dell number from the website here was the conversation....

Her: Dell, My name is _____ may I help you?
Me: Yes, I want to order a laptop
Her: OK, do you have an account?
Me: Yes, ma'am but I dont know the account number.
Her: No problem, whats your phone number?
Me: 770-471-9075
Her: Ah, NationalNet??
Me: Yes ma'am
Her: OK, you want to put this on payments or invoice?
Me: Just invoice me in full
Her: OK, what would like to order?
Me: {Gives her specs}
Her: No problem, would you like this shipped to the Billing Address?
Me: No ma'am, I need to ship it to a different office
Her: No problem, whats the address?
Me: {Gives her address}
Her: No problem, it will be there in 3 days.
Me: Thanks
Her: Thanks for choosing Dell.

End

After I hung up I thought to myself....was this just a little too easy??

This is just human nature bro. No matter what precautions are taken to thwart this type of shit someone will always find a way around it.

Did you call them from the same phone number that is listed on your account?

Sometimes companies just watch for that as verification using call display.

Still not very secure though.

You're going to have 20 people trying to scam laptops on your account now. Seriously, call Dell and make sure no one has done that, if it's that easy. :2 cents:

Aaaahh, Watson....you could be onto something :)

I did call from my office phone and it will show up on Caller ID as NationalNet, so that surely could have been how it went down.

Wonder why I didn't think of that?

Lol, someone should setup a legit account with Dell, sell the laptops on Ebay and have them shipped from Dell to the winner, then say it wasnt them.
