$5.00 Domain Names, wow how cheap can it get?
Hi,
Rackshack is now selling domain names for $5.00 each. just saw it at, www.rackshack.net Cheap as heck.. |
:thumbsup
|
good catch todd!!
|
Loss leader I guess.
even Icann registars buy them for $6.00 good deal I think... They are going through opensrs |
i put a random domain to see the process and i got
Sorry, sdfsdfsdfsdf.com has already been reserved. crazy bastards! |
that's funny Soul :)
yeh they use opensrs, so if your used to that interface it's pretty easy... |
$5.00 + tax
how much tax? they wouldn't give me a total before I needed to enter card number. |
Pudcat,
I know that tax sucks. total is like $5.41 I think |
I recently registered with opensrs ... they do reseller domains at $10 .... I wonder how rackshack is doing that, and I'm kinda weary about it ...
|
Go with a cheap yet reputable and established registrar. I know theres cheaper lesser known registrars out there, but I still like godaddy the best :thumbsup
|
Smg,
Yeh we buy ours from opensrs to for $10.00 each. I think they got a good discount from them, and also are loosing a little on each domain sales, for exposure, server sales, etc. Shit opensrs charges resellers $69.00 for SSL from geotrust and rackshack sells the same one for $25.00 Damm, I buy all our ssl certs for our stores from rackshack :) |
damn, that's cheaper than my buy price! I need to offer some free hosting or something... somehow...
|
Andrew,
yep a friend was just going to sell me his enom $6.95 account, but since RS started 5.00 domains today, I dunno :) |
i think since this is coming from rackshack it's pretty much safe
from now on i'll use them for domain registrations,it's near 35% saving from my current domain reg. (powerpipe). Great for bulk registrations |
Soul,
I trust Rackshack. Now I guess they are considered the largest server hosting company out there for resellers, etc. |
sextoyking, I'll give you 5 bucks to delete this thread, lol.
|
Andrew,
sorry bro if it conflicts with your biz. I was just trying to show everyone here a good deal :) peace Todd |
Honestly, I don't think I'll be affected that much. If things start to drop (not because of the thread, lol) I'll just have to adapt and find a way to keep my customers happy.
|
Or I can just sell my brown pimpin' hat (in sig) and live of the interest alone :1orglaugh
|
Andrew,
It won't affect you probably at all. See you offer other services, plus probably great customer service. It's like when I see really low design prices, sometimes I am like Shit!! :) but I know our company has higher quality and usually better customer service then others. Most times people don't always just shop for the lowest price point. CS does mean alot :) |
do you have to use their hosting to register domains from them?
|

Nope, don't think so.. |
And just think...3 years ago, domains were $35 per year.
|
Yep Sherm:)
In the Middle 90's we had to pay $100.00 per domain :) I love 2003 |
There are advantages & disadvantages of the lower prices of domains. I'm sure if domains were still $100 a pop, there would be a sea of great available .com's out there. A domain simply isn't as much of an investment as it used to be.

cool...i needed a domain for a mainstream project I'm finishing up..so, will try out the new guys ;)
|
if it was anyone else but rackshack i would have suspected that there could be hidden charges for dns or to transfer the domain to another register etc like some of the other company's that do ridiculously cheap domains like uk2.net. but being rackshack i can't see there being any problems, good stuff!
they should improve there lookup tool though, you have to manually check each domain by it's extension, rather than putting in a name and getting all the variations of the name, .com .net .org .biz etc. |
what's the catch?
todd, have you been through the process of a registration yet? if so, what's the catch! :) |
hell some let them go at 3 bucks, but i do think there is a catch when they do that.
You probably need to host with them for a period of time. |
i just registered with them and I don't host there. So far, no problems.
|
sarah, what was the final # charged including the tax?
|
$5.41
|
sarah, keep us informed :)
|
They're using this cheap domain stint as a marketing tool-- Considering some clients, may use their hosting for the domains.
But for $5/year -- Noone can beat it and survive the losses. |
I'd prefer to pay 2 bucks more for a decent support at godaddy.com :2 cents:
|
godaddy $8.95 the control panel for administering them is excellent. BTY someone registered www.two.com today, never been registered before.
who said all the good names had gone? |
well, i just needed a quick domain for a site that will pretty much only make money once a year..so, 5 bucks was good and the domain wasn't that important that I couldn't take the risk.
I haven't used godaddy yet as I am a directnic user but you know, hard to ingore lower prices. I have a bunch of domains up for renewal soon and was considering transfering some to godaddy to save the money. No complaints about them? I get nervous about transfering profitable domains. |
Never had problems with them before :thumbsup
|
I reg'd domain with them, no problems yet... easy to change dns and they don't appear to be trying to tie you into their other services.
|
Iagree stick with accredited registrars fuck buying domain names from resellers.

Sarah,
good to hear you got a domain at a good price::) Yes everyone, rackshack can be trusted, no doubt about that. They don't require hosting, any upsells, etc. This is a good marketing adventure for them. $5.41 with tax isn't to bad, and if you have other domains registered with an opensrs register, you know how easy it is to change info, dns, transfer ownership, etc :thumbsup |
well Todd, anything reccomended by you can't be all that bad :)
