spoofing your ip is going thru a proxy or.. there used to be a way to spoof your ip so that when you goto a page it will say 127.0.0.1 or when you ping anybody it will say your ip is 127.0.0.1 not sure how to do it

Well in the UK "spoofing" or "spoof" is a game played in bars to see who gets the nest round of drinks in.

How can you find out if someone has spoofed the members area of your site?!

If your relying on ModRewrite only as your members area protection, I think you can expect trouble if your not already getting done over.

You will find people will signup for a membership, then write down all the target and referring URL's for your content once they are inside.
Then they can cancel the membership and continue on with a free ride bypassing your htpasswd files.

Probably the most obvious sign that your getting done over on a reasonable scale is when you see wierd referrers in your stats. For example, other peoples members areas appearing to be linking to yours. (Occasionaly fraudulent users using spoofing lists get the target and referring urls mixed up)

I know that my sites are not terribly secure - and I am working to correct the problem. For the time being, I am constantly changing the URL of my main members page (which has links to all the gallery/content pages) The gallery pages all have a referrer script, to prevent bookmarking.

My knowledge of programs, html, ect is limited and the subject of site security is something I am desperately trying to understand...!

"Spoofing" is a fairly generic term, which usually is used in connection with forging, altering, or otherwise obscuring connection information, whether it is the IP address (more common usage) or HTTP referrer.

Spoofing the source address of UDP and ICMP traffic is pretty trivial, as they are connectionless protocols. Spoofing the source address for TCP is much harder. Unless you go via an unsecured SOCKS or HTTP connect proxy to hide your address, spoofing the source address for a TCP connection is pretty useless, as the connection will not be successfully set up.
