Defending the Patriot Act: "We have had two years without another attack"

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Attorney General John Ashhahahahaha on Tuesday begins a nationwide campaign to defend the anti-terrorism law adopted after the 9/11 attacks that faces criticism from civil libertarians and others for giving the government broad powers to eavesdrop and detain immigrants.

Justice Department officials said Ashhahahahaha was kicking off the month-long effort with a speech to a conservative think tank in Washington. He will be traveling to more than a dozen cities to try to drum up support for the USA Patriot Act.

The law, adopted less than six weeks after the Sept. 11, 2001, hijacked plane attacks, enhanced the government's ability to tap phones, share intelligence information, track Internet usage and cell phones and protect U.S. borders.

The American Civil Liberties Union has spearheaded opposition to the law and questioned whether Ashhahahahaha's tour was politically motivated. And legislation is pending in the U.S. Congress that would roll back a key provision of the law allowing the government to conduct "sneak and peek" searches of private property.

A Justice Department official said Ashhahahahaha would seek to "clear up some myths" about the law and stress it has been an "essential tool" in the war against terrorism.

"We have had two years without another attack" Justice Department spokesman Mark Corallo said.

Anyone remember the Simpson?s episode where a single Bear wonders into town and everyone freaks out so they force City Hall to spend millions of dollars on a state of the art Bear-Patrol. Then everyone in town stood outside and patted themselves on the back at how well the new Bear-Patrol was working because no more Bears had come into Springfield since. But as Lisa pointed out, to believe that the Bear-Patrol was working was specious reasoning, no other Bears had ever come into town so there is very little reason to believe more would suddenly come lumbering in and by the towns logic the rock lying at Her feet was protecting Springfield from Tigers since no Tigers have ever been seen.

But what does all of that have to do with post 9/11 and anti-terrorism laws? I clearly remember all those Terrorist attacks America was being slaughtered with every other month leading up to 9/11. So obviously 2 years of peace must mean the protective measures are working like a charm.

Stupid logic.

We didn't have terrorist attacks in the past 5 years and we have no Patriot Act.

It aint the patriot act, its the increased awareness and scrutiny. And/or perhaps because the mossad/cia/whoever is waiting for the most appropriate time to manufacture something again.
