Animal Welfare

I just read a post which had some extremely disturbing, horrifying photos of innocent dogs and cats being treated in the most inhumane manner imaginable.

I am so upset that I am in tears. We have two cats and a dog in a one bedroom apartment, which makes adopting more an impossibility right now - but I want to do something to help. Cats and dogs are the most beautiful creatures - they succeed where humans sometimes fail so miserably, as their love is unconditional.

That they should be subjected to cruelty and suffering, is an abomination. My question is: Which animal rescue foundations are reputable? I just want to know that donations will be spent on saving these precious lives.

Johny Traffic 08-19-2003 07:09 AM

are you at the right forum?

SkyWalker 08-19-2003 07:13 AM

I'm more worried about how people are treated

What country do you live in?

WWF is a good 'default' animal charity.

She wants one that only supports cats and dogs and other cute, fluffy animals.

That was from my post. I know those kinds of things are incomprehensible to animal lovers like you and I.

I support In Defense of Animals run by Dr. Ellitot Katz. They have been accomplishing tremendous things in the area of animal welfare for many years and they provide lots of information how you can help and who you can right to to voice your opinion on these issues.

I have them linked on one of my animal rights domains right now.

The problem I have with a lot of animal welfare groups is that they take things over the top. I am not going to stop eating meat, or wearing wool........but I believe animals should be treated with respect.

Recommend any organisations for me?

Wildman 08-20-2003 07:03 AM

actually...those guys look fairly good.

subsubbo 08-20-2003 07:07 AM

in my opinion the PETA is the only animal rights group you need to support. they get into some crazy shit, and they are definitely the biggest voice going for AR and animal welfare. also, dollar for dollar you get the most action for your charity donations than any other AR group.

check out their sites - http://www.peta.org and http://www.peta2.org

they have a huge web campaign too that will give you enough reading material to catch up on the state of AR. just check it out, and you'll be hooked.

sorry... i wasn't trying to talk trash about http://www.AnimalRightsNews.com. :)

cheers,

Thank you for the info. I will definitely check out those sites - I know I am just one fairly broke person (thanks, Glo-Bill) but if I can save one innocent cat or dog from a hellish existence, it's definitely worth the effort.

no shit... the only "animals" i worry about are the ones abusing children and the elderly...its out of control.

skitten 08-21-2003 06:00 AM

...yeah well - the pricks who abuse children and the elderly are the same ones doing it to animals. Their victims are those who are weak and defenseless.

Most serial killers start out killing animals - so it's all relative.

Sarah_Jayne 08-21-2003 06:12 AM

surely being more worried about humans doesn't mean you can't also be worried about other animals?

abdab_1 08-21-2003 06:19 AM

Rather than giving money to people why dont you go down to the shelter and walk an unwanted dog?

Daft as it may sound here in the UK it is most welcome and whats more you get something back.

rooster 08-21-2003 06:19 AM

go bitch at the gooks.

Sarah_Jayne 08-21-2003 06:49 AM

there is a massive waiting list at Batersea Dog's home to be a dog walker....the Brits are nuts about animals.

THe local SPCA does the same here. They say only on Saturdays, but really they're happy to see you on any day. They also take people who want to bathe cats, brush bunnies, and drop off food or toy donations. The major shelters are going no-kill, so there's a huge overcrowding of fluffy animals now.

I'm not sure where you are, but SCPA stands for Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. They deal mostly with farm and house animals, but sometimes they also do local wild animal control and rescue.

Hope that helps!

Sarah_Jayne 08-21-2003 09:30 AM

RSPCA is the same thing in the UK

Thanks - that is a wonderful suggestion. (Of course it is going to be difficult - as you can't help but want to bring them all home with you!) I live in L.A. so I know that there are plenty of animal shelters in my area.

=^..^=

Why don't you like cats? Because their dicks are bigger than yours?
