Anyone use Canon scanners?

The window to the right is the Canoscan driver window, showing what is going to be scanned... and the window directly underneath it (Untitled-Scanned-05) is the image that the scanner has just returned.

BIG difference in colour, brightness and contrast... :( As you can see, I've had to do 5 scans at varying levels of exposure just to get the image looking half right in the image processing app.

Why is there this discrepancy between the driver preview, and what is passed to the image app? Very strange...

Has anyone else seen this with their scanner? I'm using a CanoScan 5000F, scanning from a film negative, into the supplied Photostudio application.
