How much do you NEED to make?

When I buy things I usually just BUY them straight out, and don't finance. The exception is my house which I rent from a sweet older lady, but I am only here when school is out. So once I am back in school, I only NEED to make about $15 a day to stay on top of my payments, that is to say I can still be insured, still eat, still have my cell phone, and not take a dollar from the bank.

When I am in school it is great -- I bank a shitload and buy myself a toy at every break. I am curious what other people's costs of living are.

Sly_RJ 08-16-2003 09:19 AM

Probably $20 for base expenses.

Are you in SoCal? How much does it cost to live in nice 3 BR apt or condo in a decent neighborhood there?

Johny Traffic 08-16-2003 09:23 AM

I need about $2,000 for my mortgage a month, about $1000 for home bills, about $1000 to eat, about $1000 going out and entertainment.

So thats about $167 a day without saving or paying any loans

Jakke PNG 08-16-2003 09:23 AM

I have to pay 200?/month for my appartement, that I own.. :(
cable modem, cable tv, car insurances, phonebills, server rent and food. I need to make 1000?/month.. and that leaves nothing extra. :)

Adult Site Traffic 08-16-2003 09:25 AM

NEED to make? To cover house, utilities, food, gas... Probably 100.00/day.

To live up to our current standards? NEED to make probably $200.00/day to simply sustain.

You know your post made me think, how much do I need to make per month just to get by, so I am adding it up now

And the result is
$ 6500.00

and now I still have to eat

(that includes school (kids in college) - Life and Health Insurance - Utilities, etc)

UH,, Ok back to work I go LOL

Andy 08-16-2003 09:30 AM

well .. when I would just pay what I need to like flat, food, ADSL:winkwink: and such basic stuff I need about $400 a month so like $14 a day .. but plus some basic entertainment (just simple) I would go with $20 a day no problem I think

TheJimmy 08-16-2003 09:40 AM

I finally got my expenses down to around a few hundred a day ;)

2-5 depending on the woman's shopping patterns...

:thumbsup

brizzad 08-16-2003 09:40 AM

I could get by with $8 a day

Bucho 08-16-2003 09:45 AM

Tipsy 08-16-2003 09:47 AM

Why not...hmmm...around $3k before any money can be spent on luxuries.

Seacoast NH, I think it's the second most expensive area in the US to live. I'm really lucky, a family friend rents me her house on the beach for 1100 a month, and it's fully furnished. Great for a student.

InsaneGreen 08-16-2003 09:59 AM

rent+food+bills=around $2500 a month.

I pay 550 euros/month from my 2 room apartment with sauna and lake view.
I live in Finland.

Carrie 08-16-2003 10:05 AM

Breaking it down into a daily cost is interesting. Doesn't make it seem like such a big amount then, and you can equate it to signups.

Like you guys who need $20 per day - if you make one $35 signup per day, your expenses are covered *and* you've got nearly that amount over again to stick in the bank.

SkyWalker 08-16-2003 10:05 AM

$100 a day

angelsofporn 08-16-2003 10:08 AM

you guys have it easy...i'm in southern california....i need around 15k a month just to cover my bills..thats just bills...i live pretty simply too...thats just mortgages and junk

Rictor 08-16-2003 10:09 AM

My bills...house payment, two car payemnts, car insuranance, groceries, gas, health insurance, utilities, and other miscellaneous expenses are around $4k a month, I believe.

All my leftover cash goes to projects or the bank account (which is used for projects.) Occasionally I'll buy something stupid, but not much lately...

no rent paying for me because I own the apartment, all other expenses (cell phone, gas, server, ISP,....) are 300 euros/month + some 700 euros/month for food, drinks & going out....so that's 30 euros a day

KRL 08-16-2003 11:52 AM

Its pretty hard to live a nice life these days if you have a family and kids on less than $100,000 a year. That's why you see so many households where both husband and wife work.

If you're single, you should be able to get by on $50K though that's not living very luxuriously either.

Luxury time kicks in once you are in the solid 5 and 6 fig range per month.

You "should be able to get by" on $50k? What the fuck are you people spending your money on!?

Sure, if you buy every toy and go out to restaurants or clubs every night, $50k might not go far. But how many people do that? Seriously? Single people making $50k a year without equity or money in the bank are asking for trouble. That's outrageous, even in a major city.

Do them a favor and setup an appointment with a money manager...

I second that - I can show you how to support a family of 4 and live *very* nicely on $50k.
Then again, some people's minimum version of *very* nicely is to have a house like Brad Shaw's. ;)

Egads.
Might I suggest moving?

Tala 08-16-2003 12:57 PM

Wow. I get by on $900/mo. Not happily, mind you, but I do get by. When I get the odd job here and there, it helps a great deal, and much of that is spent to reduce the debts I have.

Peaches 08-16-2003 02:24 PM

My minimum monthly budget these days is $4500+.

This includes business expenses though (server, domain renewal, etc.)

It's the damn "extras" that kill me - my kid just wrecked my truck so that's $1000 for a deductible, the dogs gets sick - another $200, my car needs new tires - another $600. Crap like that adds up FAST.

brutus 08-16-2003 03:18 PM

? 2000 / month = ? 70 / day ...meaning that this is minumum I need. Fortunately I have been able to do quite nicely :)

Amen to that Peaches! It seems that there has been "a lot" of extras for everyone this year... Everytime I turn around there goes another $1k... The dog, the car, etc etc....

Damn for real? That would get you a relatively high standard of living in many other parts of the world!

CigarMan 08-16-2003 03:40 PM

You can live pretty well here on $50k/year. I own an apartment building in a nice residential neighbor 20 minutes from the city and $500/month is the most I can get for the 2 bedroom ones. I have 3 houses but only 1 with a mortgage on it. I'm selling it now. Right now I need about $3k-$5k/month to keep everything paid. The utility bills skyrocket in the winter thanks to the gas company. After I sell the house it will drop to $1K-$2k/month and rents will cover that. Whatever I make on the net will be gravy from that point on. I'm not big on buying toys other than houses. Not having kids or a wife other than Peaches who is 800 miles away from me helps a lot. :thumbsup

I edited to add here is Pittsburgh.

Hubby and I have been considering Pittsburgh for Carnegie Mellon (for his master's degree) and because I like snow in winter. What's it like there?

SLY1 08-16-2003 03:51 PM

We live in SoCal....expenses are around 5k per month, we have rent control, so that is fortunate or else we'd be paying arounnd 7K per month (for rent, auto, bills, insurance, etc)

Samoan 08-16-2003 04:12 PM

$650 is probably the lowest I've seen for a one bedroom apartment in the valley, but it's not really a place you want to live in.

tranza 08-16-2003 04:15 PM

$600 for everything plus $400 for college expenses.....

Mr Pheer 08-16-2003 04:27 PM

just to cover my expenses, costs me about $5800 a month

so thats like, $190 a day or close to it

everything over that is play money

It's a good place to live. You definately do NOT want to live in the city or Allegheny county because they tax you to death if you own a home. Rent is a lot cheaper in the suburbs. People are friendly, low crime rate, etc. CMU is one of the top schools in the country so you can't go wrong their either. You have major league sports Pirates (if you can call them major league), Penguins, and the Steelers. Some of the top museums in the world all funded by the Carnegies. An amusement park that has 2 of the top coasters in the world. Skiing within an hour from here and beaches within 2 hours. Those are the upsides.

The downside is PA taxes you to death if you own your own business. Not a lot of job opportunities here that pay more than $8-$10/hour unless you have a degree AND experience. The weather isn't that great but if you like snow you're ok. We have about 3 months of summer and not even that this year. The roads here are terrible, pothole city. There's also a saying here that the shortest distance between 2 points is under construction.

I've lived here for 36 years and I'm ready to move somewhere else but it really isn't a bad place to live. Hope that helps.

The Click 08-16-2003 07:21 PM

I have $3800 in bills a month including rent, server, and car. So better get back to work or I wont eat next month.:helpme

fang 08-16-2003 07:23 PM

I need atleast $200.00 a day just too wake up.

Sly_RJ 08-16-2003 07:26 PM

A lot of you have been mentioning servers, domains, content, etc...

That stuff doesn't count. If you're even partially serious about Internet porn, you should be setting up a company (corporation) to handle all of your business based expenses. Separate business from personal life. Going in debt with your business for a year is usually no big deal. Going in debt with your personal life is a bit more of a problem.

DrewKole 08-16-2003 07:41 PM

Since I've got some investments paying for themselves.

My primary housing & basic expenses are $3k/mo.

Thats base. =/ The rest of my crap, BLAH! =(
