If you could pick up a 1960 Thunderbird for 2500 to rebuild, would you ?

I would have to see it inside and out....

Whats the condition?

Convertible or hardtop?

If it was intact, or most parts there, without a doubt, yes.
That car is 33 years old, and was a collector car many many years ago. Imagine how much that car is worth in parts alone? :)

When i say condition, how badly if at all is the body panels rusted out?

What kind of work? You are dealing with an antique car. That alone is worth money, providing you don't have to spend bucks finding parts for it. If it is all intact, I would take a close look at it. :2 cents:

It all depends on what you mean by *rebuild*. Frame off restorations are only for those who are equipped to do it. Pay someone to do it and you could spend another $20,000 easily. Frame rot is the most concern with 60's-70's classic cars.... you can get parts for any that have demand. If the car comes out of a dry climate like Arizona pick it up by all means. If it comes out of the areas like the Great Lakes bypass for sure. It will suck you dry for everything that has not only rotted with age, but because of where it came from.

Advice, if you spend a lot of money on that car... it's gonna be a waste, it's not that popular a model of a Thunderbird, so you won't recoup your time and investment

but... it is worth 2500 if you know cars and it runs

heres what you do assuming that it runs

spend a little time getting the engine, drive train tip top, change all the fluids, plugs, give it a decent tune up

then spend a week detailing the car cleaning inside and out, clean then powerwax the paint

put it on a hoist clean up the undercarriage, etc etc

last do the interior


turn around, take it to Vegas and sell it for $5000 to 6000

then buy something better ;)

think about it your gonna pay $2500 for a car
that will cost you at least 10k to make it look and run good
if you do it right

the only value is if it has a j code engine
otherwise they have a 1960 that cant even get a $1k bid

I don't rebuild cars, but I rebuild motorcycles from the early 70's, pretty much the same concept on a smaller scale.

As a rule the people that rebuild a classic loose money. When they finish the project they sell it for about half the investment, and the next guy enjoys it.

People rebuild classics for the enjoyment and satisfaction, but its cheaper by far to get one already done. A thousand things you never thought of will bite you during the restoration.

It was in a barn in Sacto area and my hub would restore as a hobby..
