Microsoft Drops Outlook Express

Microsoft abandons Outlook Express

Microsoft will not do any more development work on the world's most popular email client

It might be the world's most widely distributed email client, but Microsoft has confirmed that it has no intention of further developing Outlook Express.

"[Outlook Express] just sits where it is," said Dan Leach, lead product manager for Microsoft's information worker product management group. "The technology doesn't go away, but no new work is being done. It is consumer email in an early iteration, and our investment in the consumer space is now focused around Hotmail and MSN. That's where we're putting the emphasis in terms of new investment and new development work."

"Watch how many people we can drive to our shitty ISP and e-mail providers. Muahahahaha."

BRISK 08-13-2003 09:42 PM

I don't really see what more development it would need anyways.

I haven't been able to do any work for the last few days because of issues with my partners, and my girl is on vacation... so I soak up the drama here :). It's not caffeine, its red bull and adderall.

Microsoft is slick. No more giving it away for free. Now it will cost $100 or so to buy Outlook. Mark my words.

funny story, SBC/Pacebell would not help me resolve my email problems last week unless i was to use Outlook or Netscape mail. In fact they were so rude about it, bitch told me to hang up the phone and than after 3 warnings hung up on me because of fuckin Outlook

mandrake? if so I was wondering. would Linux on an ibm be the best way to go. i been looking at them zSeries ibm's for a month or so are they worth the money. i havent fucked with a full blown server like thos. someone told me to just build one, but a server is not the same as a desktop unit. im thinking of just buying one taking it apart and learning how it works. That my way of how a MSCE Guru should be.

Outlook express is perfect the way it is, I can't see anywhere that needs improving anyhow. It kickass compared to some of the other mail clients I tried a couple of years ago.
