Is there a way to find out how many times a word or phrase is searched on google?

No

ok then, how many more times do you think a keyword is searched on google than it is on Overture?

I remember reading (possibly on WebmasterWorld???) a reasonable guess that Google was 8 times more active than Overture.

But, I'd think the ratios between a lot of phrases might differ somewhat between the two, since I feel people use the two search engines differently.

I interviewed there a while ago. Only time I've EVER been turned down for a company.. they have impossibly high standards.. they won't even hire junior systems administrators without a degree..

so there might be ugly fat girls, but they're way too smart to fall for that unfortunately.. otherwise it'd be all about doing her, getting her to inject some code into the main source repository that allows you to put your sites to the top at will

Buy an adword for that keyword for a couple days. It's worth the investment before you start optimizing. In your ad manager it will tell you how many impressions your ad has received... make sure you set up your account so that your ad is always showing.
