Win2K server and network printer

I have a windows 2000 server, a switch, and a network printer.

Win2k server ---> switch ---> printer

How do I setup the printer? Anypne knows?
Something with setting up the IP, but how to do this?

No he doesnt. The Win2K box can act as a print server as long as the printer has a built in network card.

You just add a local printer. When you go in deselect auto finding, then add a port, the port usually being standard TCP/IP, but depends on printer type. Then you add the IP of the printer as the port number. The rest of the wizard should be straight forward.

OK! Sounds quite real. I'll go try this. Coz I have the IP of the printers netcard, found it when printing out the printers config. I just thought I had to change the IP in the printer netcard. But that I couldnt figure. :)
Btw, it's a HP color laserjet 4550N.
Thanks! :thumbsup

And that's actually what I want. The win2K server to act as print server. The server has 3 clients connected through the switch, so I guess and hope, that the above printer add procedure will do. :)

The only thing you have to worry about is what IP the printer used. If your not using DHCP then you will have to set the printer so it is on the same IP scheme as your server. You can use Jetadmin to do that, which you can download from HP or should be on a cd that came with the printer.

The other issue is if you are using DHCP it could possibly change the printers IP which would cause you to go in and set it up again in the server. I recommend you give it a static IP or set a reservation in DHCP if you know how.

Ok... The IP range need to be changed in the printer then. I see it's not within this. I'll go get Jetadmin to obtain this.
The printer IP must be in the server IP range I figure.
Perhaps it's possible to change the printer IP with this Jetadmin tool?
Your words are gold to me

It got to my attention that the DHCP server is included in the router to the DSL. I cannot re-configure this one.
But I think the mentioned procedure will work. I'll test and post result here then. :)

Yes Jetadmin will allow you to change the IP on the printer. IT should find it by scanning your network but if it doesnt then you should be able to use the MAC address from the network card in the printer to identify it.
