GeForce FX 5900 Ultra or ATI Radeon 9800 Pro ??

anyone have experience with either or?

with half life 2 comin out, and doom3, it'll practically a must to have these cards...

Lonny 08-11-2003 11:35 AM

ATI 9800 :thumbsup

iroc409 08-11-2003 11:38 AM

i don't know anything about the gf, but ati kicks ass. i've had a ton of cards, including my 9700 pro. doubt you would have any problems with the 9800 pro 256mb. i doubt even the complexities of the new halflife will outrun that. :)

although i hope the prices on that bad boy come down soon, i'd hate spending $500 on a video card :(

Backov 08-11-2003 11:39 AM

The ATI is the better card, by a tiny margin.. However, that said, the drivers aren't as good. You WILL run into driver problems on some games, maybe minor, maybe really annoying.

nVidia still has the edge there, they have the best drivers in the biz. Some people don't have issues with ATI drivers, but a lot do - beware..

yeah man.. just saw that half life 2 630 meg preview, very awesome... doom3 though i believe will be quite a bit better and more graphically intense... and i've heard that it is supported better with geforce 5900 ultra... who knows

ati would have had the market cornered for a long time if they had their drivers strait. :( just remember to download the latest version off the site when you get the card. most likely the original boxed drivers will have issues with some games.

radeon = better

depends on who paid who to make the game. from what i hear, hl2 and doom3 are going to be very similar in graphics. although i think the more intense part may come in the hl2's engine... where basically every single concievable item, including the terrain is dynamic. that's fucking wicked. did you notice how the mattress flopped around? or how when he's talking to the scientist.. look at the magnifying glass by the desk, it actually magnifies the dude's hands while he's typing. or when he knocks the computer off the desk and the scientist actually responds, or.... man, i could go on for fucking ever about the insane improvements of that game. truly unreal. i think the most surprising thing was the dynamic input/output, like the example where he grabs the security camera and it works real-time...

but, just like amd vs intel vs mac, you can always write your code optimized for whoever has the biggest check :)

Arty 08-11-2003 11:46 AM

Neither... booth cards currently suffering from serious screen flicker problem. I would wait until the fix issued..

But other that that readeon seems better, but it was lacking at the drivers side last time I've checked..

but remember... id software (makers of doom) revolutionized the FPS scene with the first doom. i highly, highly doubt they're going to allow a game (half life 2) released before their game, be any better than the highly anticipated doom3.

have you seen the doom3 preview? they didn't show as nearly as much footage as hl2, and i'm sure they didn't show every trick up their sleeve, but it looked equally as impressive. but i'm willing to bet it'll be a much better gaming experience.

they've possibly pushed back the release date to the 1st quarter of 2004, they're making it better imo.

iroc409 08-11-2003 11:54 AM

well, i dunno which one will be better. id was definitely a revolutionary (but that was a LONG time ago), but valve sure has their shit together. since i WAS a die-hard doom player, and i definitely enjoy my share of valve's products, i'm sure i'll enjoy both profusely :)

Lonny 08-11-2003 11:54 AM

yep yep, doom2 is what got me into computers. made my own levels, textures, and monsters, fun stuff.

I'd stick to the Radeons. They are superior in AA and also will have better support of the games on the long run. Just recently there was a scandal of HalfLife 2 not fully supporting the NVidias, which caused a lot of controversy over if Valve preferred the ATi products. Also, the first Doom ]I[ demo ran on a Radeon 9700 I believe.

Also, it is cheaper, as far as I recall. Oh by the way, in case someone is selling a graphics card that'll outperform my fucked up Radeon 8500, let me know.

iroc409 08-11-2003 12:18 PM

i got into fps with doom (the first one). i was a flight sim guy, stuff like wing commander (fucking LOVED that game... i miss it :( ), falcon 3 and the like. i made some kick-ass doom levels, i tell ya. had a small dm level that was pretty cool, including a couple drop-off pits that if you fell in, you couldn't get out, but they had invuln. spheres at the bottom so you were basically fucked for a while. we played it a bunch tho, it was an awesome map. that game fucking ruled.

hl2 is fucking amazing, it makes me shudder with anticipation. i haven't seen the doom3 stuff yet. valve really did their homework. and considering hl is still very popular even though it's several years old testifies their products.

actually, i was thinking about posting this. i have a 9700 pro 128mb that's a fucking awesome card. i can run ut2k3 at 1600x1200x32 without _any_ dropped frames or latency, i fucking love this card. but, with the new one out i kinda wanna upgrade. it'd be a huge step up from what you have, i might wanna sell if you're interested... hit me up. i treat my hardware like china, so it's in good shape. it's a real ati card too, not a knock-off (still have the retail box).

X37375787 08-11-2003 12:22 PM

pimp shizzle. hit me up on ICQ 155421

NBDesign 08-11-2003 12:24 PM

I have an older Radeon 7200 and an older G-Force... I like the ATI better.... so I am sure the 9800 will kick ass.

iroc409 08-11-2003 12:25 PM

i have to run an errand, i'll hit you up when i get back. you do know these are still pretty high-end cards, the model just below the 9800...

Althought the Doom and Quake series were revolutionary, I think no other game has reached such a popularity status as HL. Admittedly, HL probably would have ended up like yet another 3D shooter, hadn't the guys from Counter-Strike.net developed the perhaps most addicting online mutliplayer game ever.
