How can I tell if I'm being hitbotted?

My stats have really jumped on my site, and it's really scaring me.

How can I investigate this and what is the possible damage this can cause?

you'll see hundreds of hits in one day from just one single ip, can't really cause damage, just confusion in stats/ratios.. ban that ip, and you're good to go :thumbsup
